SUMMARY:Environmental Data Justice: Visions & Values
DESCRIPTION:Activists striving to create more livable shared futures are increasingly struggling with the discriminatory force of data. We need new practices and principles to wrestle with the fraught politics of data in justice work\, including environmental justice. Even as we may need to work with data\, data is always messy\, partial\, political and provisional. What frameworks and lessons might guide us? \nWe invite you to participate in creating the visions and values of what we might call “Environmental Data Justice.” This is an open online event for community organizers\, practitioners\, researchers\, and students working at the front lines of environmental and data justice struggles. All are welcome. \nWe hope that Environmental Data Justice might become a useful framework that ties together principles of Environmental Justice and Digital Justice in ways that help raise and address important issues of access\, anti-racism\, sovereignty\, consent\, and community control in response to increased surveillance and discrimination through data.  Building on the principles of environmental justice\, this event defines environment broadly to include urban spaces and issues of community conditions shaping life and public well-being\, in addition to important questions of pollution. \nWe invite you to join us in this co-learning event to share the lessons\, tools\, frameworks\, and guiding values from your Environmental and Data Justice projects. \nWhen: Thursday\, February 28\, 2019 at 7-9pm EST/ 4-6pm PST.   \nWhat: An online workshop sharing lessons learned and frameworks for environmental and data justice work. \nWhere: Register to receive a link. \nWho is invited: Community organizers\, practitioners\, environmental justice organizers\, data justice organizers\, academics\, students\, and anyone interested. \nFormat: The evening will be organized through panels of invited speakers who will give short talks to ignite our conversation and learning. This event will be recorded and shareable online. \nSchedule: \nOpening: Bringing Environmental and Data Justice Together \nPanel 1: Sharing Frameworks Across Struggles \nKristyn Sonnenberg\, Detroit Community Technology Project\nNasma Ahmed\, Director\, Digital Justice Lab\nDesi Rodriguez-Lonebear\, U.S. Indigenous Data Sovereignty Network \nPanel 2: Sharing Lessons from Projects \nOlga Bautista: Ban Petcoke\, Southeast Environmental Taskforce\, Poor Peoples’ Movement\nLaura Perovich and ECO Youth Crew\, Greenroots Chelsea \nErin McElroy\, Cofounder\, Anti-Eviction Mapping Project \nFinal Discussion:  Next Steps \nAims: \n\nStart a co-learning community around Environmental Data Justice\nBuild towards the development of a Environmental Data Justice inspired by the principles of Environmental Justice and Data Justice.\nCreate a syllabus that can be shared online.\n\nTopics for possible discussion: \n\nSurveillance and Counter-surveillance\nConsent and Refusal\nOwnership of data and data infrastructures\nAccess\nFlawed and incomplete data (e.g.\, industry-produced data)\nCommunity-generated data\, community science\, and monitoring\nData sovereignty\nUse of health\, housing\, and personal data\nPractices of community review of data\nData scoring like risk assessment\n\nEDGI Code of Conduct. \nAbout EDGI \nThe Environmental Data & Governance Initiative (EDGI) is a network of academics\, practitioners\, and non-profits addressing potential threats to United States federal environmental and energy policy\, and to the scientific research infrastructure built to investigate\, inform\, and enforce them. EDGI is a distributed collaboration operating under the fiscal sponsorship of the non-profit\, Public Lab\, with volunteer members across North America.

SUMMARY:Conference Call: New Ways to Fight Old Energy
DESCRIPTION:Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) has been defending Virginia for years against new pipelines and compressor stations and fracked-gas power plants. But now it’s time to play offense and take the fight directly to the dirty energy companies who are the real source of the war against clean water\, landowner justice\, and a livable climate. \nHere are the details: \nWhat: Activist Conference Call to Learn about the Virginia Alternative Energy and Coastal Protection Act\nWhen: Tuesday\, January 9\, 7:00 pm\nWhere: Your living room! Call-in details will be emailed to you after you RSVP.  RSVP and register here.\nWhy: Let’s stop future pipelines before they even start\, and protect our communities in Virginia from climate change \nOn the call\, we’ll tell you all about the proposed Virginia Alternative Energy and Coastal Protection Act (or VCPA for short). This bill would provide over a BILLION dollars in revenue for Virginia to invest in energy efficiency\, solar and wind power\, and new job training for former fossil fuel workers in Southwest Virginia\, along with the first large-scale investments in coastal Virginia to combat the staggering impacts of sea-level rise. \nLate last year\, Gov. Terry McAuliffe used his executive power to commit Virginia to creating a “cap” on carbon emissions from power plants with a carbon auction that will create over $1.5 BILLION dollars in “carbon revenue” by 2030. But without legislation like VCPA\, that money will flow to the polluting companies themselves\, like Dominion Energy and Appalachian Power. Unconscionably\, it will be a windfall for the very companies who are the problem. The AECPA\, instead\, mandates that all the money from the auction of pollution permits must be invested in alternative energy\, job training\, and adaptation measures in the face of rapid climate change. \nWe’ll also update you on the latest news about the Mountain Valley and Atlantic Coast Pipelines. Last month\, both pipelines were given conditional approval by the Virginia State Water Control Board. But those “conditions” could be decisive in our legal and regulatory battles to stop the pipelines. Learn more on the call – and how you can help. \n
