Purchase tickets here: https://www.tugg.com/events/little-pink-house-dauw \nBased on a true story\, a small-town paramedic named Susette Kelo leaves a bad marriage\, and starts over in a new town. She buys a rundown cottage with a gorgeous water view. She fixes it up and paints it pink. Then she discovers powerful politicians want to bulldoze her blue-collar neighborhood for the benefit of a multi-billion dollar corporation. With the help of a young lawyer named Scott Bullock\, Susette emerges as the reluctant leader of her neighbors in an epic battle that goes all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court\, inspires a nation\, and helps millions of Americans protect their homes. \nIn 2005\, the nation was shocked by the Supreme Court’s ruling in Kelo vs. New London. In the judgment\, the court said that a local government could forcibly seize people’s homes\, through eminent domain\, in order to transfer the property to a major corporation for development. The response was immediate. Across the country\, states passed legislation and amended constitutions to curtail the power of eminent domain.  In 2012\, the people of Virginia spoke out overwhelmingly when more than 2.6 million citizens (74.45% of votes cast) approved amending the state constitution to prohibit eminent domain from being invoked if the “primary use is for private gain\, private benefit\, private enterprise\, increasing jobs\, increasing tax revenue or economic development.” \nPlaintiff Susette Kelo’s fight has been dramatized in this new film\, Little Pink House\, starring the brilliant\, Oscar-nominated actress Catherine Keener as Kelo. \nThe film is being distributed in an unorthodox manner. Local people sign up to bring it to their town and\, if enough tickets are sold\, a screening proceeds at a selected local theater. We are pleased to announce that Doug Hornig has secured a showing of the film in Charlottesville: \nWHERE: The Regal Stonefield\, 1954 Swanson Dr\, Charlottesville\nWHEN: Thursday\, June 28 at 7:30 p.m.\nTICKETS: Tickets are $12 general admission\, and proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Friends of Nelson. Many of us have been fighting them for several years now\, and continue to do so. \nWe hope to use this event to help educate the public about the importance of fighting eminent domain abuse. Following the film\, there will be a panel discussion and Q&A featuring: John Kramer – Institute for Justice\, Chuck Lollar – Attorney specializing in eminent domain cases\, Richard Averitt – Property owner impacted by Atlantic Coast Pipeline\, Joyce Burton – Board member\, Friends of Nelson\, a nonprofit dedicated to stopping this unnecessary pipeline. \nJoin us – and bring family\, friends\, and neighbors! SUMMARY:Gerryrigged: Turning Democracy on Its Head
DESCRIPTION:OneVirginia2021: Virginians for Fair Redistricting invites you to join us for a special screening of Gerryrigged:  Turning Democracy on Its Head. \nGerrymandering\, the process by which political district lines are drawn by the very politicians who stand to benefit by them\, affects the fabric of our democracy in profound ways.  Gerryrigged:  Turning Democracy on Its Head examines its impact in this hour-long documentary\, a partnership of WCVE (PBS) with OneVirginia2021: Virginians for Fair Redistricting.  Learn how non-partisan reform efforts in Virginia can change this dangerous trend and return political power to the voters. \nThe film\, with speaker Bill Oglesby\, will be shown on Tuesday November 28\, 2017\, at 7:00 pm at the Historic Wayne Theater\, 521 West Main St.\, Waynesboro VA.   The event is free. \nOneVirginia2021 is committed to education and advocacy\, with a multi-partisan approach that includes Republicans\, Democrats\, and Independents.  We believe that state and congressional districts belong to the citizens of our Commonwealth\, and not to any legislator\, political party\, or special interest. \n

SUMMARY:Energize Appalachia
DESCRIPTION:Join Appalachian Voices on Tuesday\, October 17\, 2017\, at 7:00 p.m. for Energize Appalachia\, an evening about energy transition in Appalachia and beyond. \nThe event will feature: award-winning journalist\, author and long-time Appalachian Voices board member Clara Bingham\, who will screen her film The Last Mountain\, which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival; a short film by the Light House students; and a panel discussion with Clara\, Kate Boyle of Appalachian Voices\, and Logan Landry from Sigora Solar. This event is free and open to the public. \nAbout Energize Appalachia \nFor more than a century\, Appalachian coal built our infrastructure\, our universities\, and powered our technological advancement. But it came at an enormous cost for mountain communities. Coal companies have blown up more than 500 of the oldest\, most biologically rich mountains in the world and buried over 2\,000 miles of headwater streams. Appalachian communities located near mountaintop removal mines have double the cancer rates of nearby counties with no mining activity. \nNow\, with the Trump administration’s commitment to revive the coal industry\, West Virginia’s Coal River Mountain—known as the Last Mountain—is facing renewed threats from mountaintop removal mining. \nAppalachian Voices is working to Energize Appalachia by putting solar power on schools\, low-income housing communities\, hospitals\, and old mountaintop removal mine sites in the heart of Southwest Virginia’s coal country. By creating a clean energy economy in the coalfields\, we can build more vibrant\, healthy communities for future generations. \nTO RSVP: fill out our form online\, join our Facebook event\, or contact Susan Kruse susan@appvoices.org
