SUMMARY:Climate Action Team Meeting and Activist Training - Shenandoah Valley
DESCRIPTION:What: Climate Action Team Meeting and Activist Training – Shenandoah Valley\nWhen: Monday\, August 13th\, 6:30 – 8:30 pm\nWhere: Staunton Public Library (1 Churchville Ave\, Staunton VA 24401) \nRSVP: Click here to RSVP. Invite all your friends!\n \nAt this climate action meeting you will get an overview of the most dire threats that Virginia faces — like fracked-gas pipelines and compressor stations — and what we can do to stop them.  \nThen\, we will look at the most pressing climate solutions to cut greenhouse gas emissions and get Virginia join the other states in the country that are taking the climate fight into their own hands. \n \nParamount among these steps is for Virginia to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). By joining RGGI\, big polluters like Dominion will finally have to pay for all of the harm that they are doing to our climate and communities. This will bring up to $200 million back to Virginia each year\, which can be reinvested into coastal resiliency and clean energy. \n \nIt is time to let our Virginia leaders know that we want solutions.

SUMMARY:Parkway Picnic to Protest the Pipelines
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, August 9 at 5 PM – 8 PM\, Blue Ridge Pkwy\, Bent Mountain\, VA 24059 \nJoin Preserve Floyd and friends as we picnic and protest the pipelines at 5 pm on August 9 between the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) mile marker 136 and the 221 Bent Mtn entrance to the BRP. Bring your families! Bring your friends! Enjoy the summer with us and take a stand for justice. \nWe’ll make sandwiches and cupcakes! We’ll have games and songs! Bring an (easy) side dish\, a dessert\, drinks\, musical instruments\, blankets or chairs for picnicking upon\, extra veggies from your garden to share…or just yourself. And a protest sign! \nPreserve Floyd turned four this summer\, so this celebration of community\, effective action and resistance is intended to be a birthday bash. Any and all are welcome to join! We especially hope to support our fellow grassroots Preserve groups with some food\, fellowship and continued solidarity. \nPlease bring relics from our movement that will show how we’ve grown: yard signs\, flags\, posters\, etc. You can also make new ones for this protest! We encourage you to investigate what’s happening with the MVP and ACP the week of Aug 9th and structure your messaging accordingly. \nin 2014\, Preserve Floyd said “Stop the PipelineS.” We meant it. Do not let the construction fool you–there are still plenty of ways that Virginia can step up and STOP the environmental and social injustice that the MVP and ACP are perpetuating upon the people. \nSo exercise your first amendment rights to peaceful protest\, enjoy the company of your communities\, and come picnic with us!

SUMMARY:The Air We Breathe Community Meeting
DESCRIPTION:*COMMUNITY MEETING: Monday\, August 6\, 5:00-6:30 pm\, Union Hill Church\, with potluck to follow. 1496 Union Hill Road (Route 663)\, Buckingham\, VA 23921. Learn how to challenge and comment on the draft air permit for the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline compressor station. \nACP & UNION HILL COMPRESSOR STATION: BAD DEAL – NOT DONE DEAL: It is still possible to stop the proposed 54\,000 + horse power ACP Compressor Station that would endanger and diminish the health and land values of all residents of Buckingham County and destroy the lives of the historic African American community of Union Hill. The permits for the pipeline and its compressor station are not complete and the project is currently being challenged in the courts. Dominion’s false claims of safety have begun. The next challenge is to deny the air permit for the compressor station. Without the compressor station\, the ACP\, a robbery of and threat to all Virginians\, cannot be built. \nTHE AIR WE BREATHE: This compressor station\, a giant one\, even by industry standards would bring loud constant noise and release toxic poisons into Buckingham’s air and water. The health of children is particularly vulnerable to the methane\, formaldehyde\, arsenic\, benzene\, xylene and other compounds the compressor will regularly release. Above and underground storage tanks create a fire and explosion hazard completely beyond the capacity of distant volunteer firefighters. The station has few staff on site and would be built on a former slave plantation atop the unmarked slave graves of Union Hill ancestors.  Please note that although the information provided by the Va Department of Environmental Quality puts this compressor station in the minor category\, that is a technical term based on the amount of pollutants it can emit. The environmental regulations do not protect our air water and health; they allow ACP to pollute up to very high levels that impact human and all life\, especially those most vulnerable\, the elderly and children. \nLIFT UP YOUR VOICE: The public comment period for the compressor station draft air permit is August 8\, 2018 until September 11\, 2018. Join neighbors who have researched the facts and bring yourself to the important work of protecting your water\, air\, health and right to own your own land. Any time you have is enough\, is needed. \nFor more information\, Friends of Buckingham phone contact: 434 969 3229 ( Chad)

SUMMARY:Environmental Justice for Union Hill
DESCRIPTION:Come join concerned citizens to stand with Union Hill and Buckingham residents as they present the environmental justice issues to the Governor’s Advisory Council on Environmental Justice.  Wednesday\, May 30\, VCE Building\, 13327 West James Anderson Highway\, Buckingham.  Parking across the street at Maysville Baptist Church. \nAgenda:  9-10 a.m. – tour of Union Hill (for Council members only).  Public portion of the meeting:   10 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.  There will only be 25 minutes from 11:35 for individuals to make public comments related directly to the ACEJ subcommittee report and the DEQ presentation on the permit for the Union Hill Compressor Station. After that\, 12-1 in-council discussion on the subcommittee recommendations to the ACEJ. Lunch. Presentation. 1:50 -2:15 general public comment time.   Although\, individuals from Union Hill have had the opportunity to speak with ACEJ subcommittee members\, none of that was “on the record” of the ACEJ. So\, if possible\, during the 11:35am public comment time\, it would be a gesture of solidarity to allow the folks from Union Hill to present first person and scientific evidence of water\, air\, historic cultural\, erasures from FEIS\, etc to get these points in the public record.  \nThere is no planned rally outside the Coop building\, and we know there will be lots of allies who plan to stand in solidarity and to let the ACEJ know that they care deeply about environmental justice issues related to Union Hill. \nAdditional info here.

SUMMARY:Pipelines in [so called] VA?! NO ~fracking~ WAY!
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Virginia Student Environmental Coalition\, Charlottesville\nTuesday\, April 24 at 8 PM – 9 PM\nUniversity of Virginia\, Old Cabell Hall\, Room 107 \nMVP? ACP? Monopods? Tree sits? Resistance camps? Arrests?!\nWondering what all of this is about? \nFor years\, the profit hungry Dominion Energy\, Duke\, & EQT have been pushing two fracked gas pipeline projects on lands stretching from West Virginia through Virginia to North Carolina. Throughout the process\, politicians and regulators have consistently turned their backs\, tuning out the voices of those defending the land and the water. But countless courageous communities of resistance have fought back along both proposed routes\, successfully delaying construction… but not without sacrifice. \nVSEC Charlottesville will host a gathering (featuring *desserts*) for the Charlottesville community to catch our breath and find out how we move forward. Please come this Tuesday evening to learn more about these pipelines\, acts of resistance\, and histories of these lands. Also\, *ahem* COME EAT HOMEMADE DESSERTS!!!!

SUMMARY:Virginia Outdoors Foundation Board Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) has scheduled a special meeting of its Board of Directors for October 16\, 2017\, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Virginia State Corporation Commission\, 1300 East Main\, Richmond. The meeting is for VOF to “complete its review of conversion applications related to the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and Mountain Valley Pipeline.” \nIn 2016 the ACP developers told VOF that in order for their route to avoid Forest Service land\, it would need to cross 10 easements in Highland\, Bath\, Augusta and Nelson counties. And the MVP\, although it does not want to route its proposed pipeline across the property itself\, does want a permanent access road on a VOF conservation easement in Roanoke County. VOF has told both ACP and MVP that such incursions are incompatible with the conservation values of the easements. There is a process in state law known as “conversion” of open space\, whereby acreage under easement is swapped for other acreage elsewhere which is then put under conservation easement. Both ACP and MVP submitted conversion proposals\, and at its February 2017 meeting\, after hearing presentations from the developers\, VOF staff\, and affected landowners\, and receiving comments from hundreds of citizens. VOF’s board of trustees voted to defer a decision on applications presented by Dominion to convert open space on 10 easements that lie in the path of the proposed ACP. \nThe special meeting will be open to the public and VOF will accept written comments on the conversion applications through October 16\, 2017. To submit written comments you may use the VOF online form\, you may email comments to comments@vofonline.org\, or you may mail them to the VOF Warrenton office at 39 Garrett St.\, Suite 200\, Warrenton\, VA 20186. \nThe details of the meeting are still being finalized and are subject to change through October 13\, 2017. Check the VOF meeting page for details\, changes\, and further information.

SUMMARY:Climate Action in the Commonwealth
DESCRIPTION:Climate Action in the Commonwealth: An Introduction to Virginia’s Carbon Rule \nCharlottesville Location: Jefferson-Madison Regional Library\, Central Branch. \nJoin Virginia Conservation Network — together with 350 Central Virginia\, Appalachian Voices\, Sierra Club Virginia Chapter\, and Chesapeake Climate Action Network — for an engaging and educational evening focused on how we can work together to guarentee climate action in Virginia. Attendees will learn more about Governor McAuliffe’s Executive Directive 11 (see below for more information on what this is)\, how these regulations will affect Virginia\, and how we can help make this a success together. \nBackground on Executive Directive 11:\nIn May 2017\, Governor McAuliffe issued Executive Directive 11 — also known as the Clean Energy Virginia initiative — which directed the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to draft proposed regulations to reduce carbon pollution from stationary sources. By setting this limit\, Governor McAuliffe made Virginia the first southern state to directly address climate change. Over the course of 2017\, DEQ has been drafting the proposed regulations and will present them to the State Air Pollution Control Board for review and approval. This vote will happen in mid-November. \nExecutive Directive 11 was the result of the growing momentum of public outcry for government action on climate. This is one of the many important steps needed to tackle climate change and protect our most vulnerable communities from its devastating effects. Governor McAuliffe’s announcement started an important process to enact a carbon reduction standard for Virginia. \nThough Executive Directive 11 is moving forward\, our work is not done yet. It is critical that Virginians understand and engage in this regulatory process. These community meetings provide Virginians with the opportunity to learn how to do exactly that.

SUMMARY:Resist the Pipelines with Appalachian Voices
DESCRIPTION:Virginians have an opportunity to defeat the two proposed fracked-gas pipelines- the Mountain Valley and Atlantic Coast pipelines – that would cut across our state\, through 900 miles through pristine forests\, farms\, and wetlands and cross (and potentially contaminate) thousands of headwater streams and rivers. Inter-state pipelines require approval at both the federal and state level. As Virginia residents\, we can engage in the state-level Clean Water Act certification process to discourage the VA Department of Environmental Quality from providing a permit to pipeline builders to destroy our Virginia waterways. Our window for voicing our concerns and recommendations at the state level is quickly closing. Appalachian Voices will present a brief overview of the proposed pipelines and detail direct actions we can take right now and in the coming month to make our opinions heard to the state. Come learn more about how we can defeat the pipeline on Wednesday July 26th at 6:30 pm at the Jefferson Room at the Central Library Charlottesville.

SUMMARY:Community Mapping Project Launch and Fundraiser Dinner
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Buckingham (FoB) and Concern for the New Generation [CNG] are holding a launch event at Union Hill Baptist Church for the door-to-door project to create a “community map” of the people who would be most impacted by the Buckingham ACP compressor station\, if built. \n2 PM: CNG will hold a community dinner fund-raiser in the church dining room downstairs. Note: this is not potluck. \nLocal residents of the Union Hill/ Woods Corner proposed compressor station neighborhood will lead teams with volunteers from Charlottesville in this effort. Even though the Board of Supervisors approved a compressor station special use permit\, there are still lots of things we can do together to protect people living here in Buckingham from toxic air emissions and destruction of places of historic importance and pride. \nWe need every neighboring household’s help! \nPlease come on Saturday to join this effort and open your door to teams working on your street.
