DESCRIPTION:A Pipeline Summit – Energize\, Equip and Empower will be held Saturday\, April 23\, 2016 at the Weyer’s Cave Community Center\, Weyer’s Cave\, VA from 10 am to 3 pm. Joining ABRA as a co-sponsor is POWHR (Protect Our Water Heritage Rights)\, a coalition of organizations in 11 counties in Virginia and West Virginia that are opposing the Mountain Valley Pipeline. We welcome their participation. \nThe Summit is designed to energize\, equip and empower participants with improved information\, messages and skills to carry on their efforts in 2016 and beyond to defeat the pipelines proposed across the Allegheny-Blue Ridge region. There is a $10 charge for lunch and beverages (a wide choice of sandwiches and salads will be available)\, payable at the meeting. \nThe Summit will feature morning panel presentations on: \n\nPipeline Economics – The Need and the Impacts\nEnvironmental Challenges – New Tools That Are Available\nLessons Learned in the Battlefield (a discussion of experiences in combating proposed pipelines\, featuring Jane Kleeb\, who led the fight against the Keystone Pipeline)\n\nThe afternoon will feature five breakout discussion groups: \n\nPipeline Economics – what else we need to know and strategies to improve our messages on need and impacts\nGrowing the Grass Roots – techniques to increase citizen involvement\nPolitical Climate Change – improving legislator’s receptivity to our messages\nGeographic Information Systems – enhancing our understanding of pipeline impacts\nProgrammatic EIS – why we need it and how we must sell it\n\nAn agenda of the Summit is here. DESCRIPTION:Over the past few months there has been fierce resistance across Virginia to Dominion’s coal ash disposal plans. Thousands called on the Department of Environmental Quality to revoke lax permits that allow Dominion to dump toxic wastewater into the James River\, with dozens of citizens risking arrest to protect our waters. But this fight is only beginning. In the coming weeks\, Dominion will apply for additional permits to leave its remaining coal ash waste in unlined pits that will leach heavy metals into our groundwater for years to come\, including at its Bremo Bluff Power Station south of Charlottesville. \nJoin CCAN\, the Virginia Student Environmental Coalition\, Appalachian Voices\, and more on Wednesday April 20\, 2016\, at the Jefferson Madison Central Library\, 201 E. Market St.\, Charlottesville\, for a film screening\, discussion\, and planning for next steps. \n“Coal Ash Stories” are four short films that paint a picture of what life looks like in communities threatened by toxic coal ash contamination across the country. Sponsored by Appalachian Voices and 350.org\, this is a Day of Action in all parts of the Commonwealth\, calling on Governor McAuliffe to live up to his commitment to deliver to the people of Virginia a truly Clean Power Plan that cuts carbon pollution long-term and safeguards health and prosperity for generations to come. \nDominion Resources\, the Richmond-based parent company of Dominion Virginia Power\, is heavily invested in the natural gas sector\, primarily transmission and storage. That has led Dominion to lobby for an implementation plan that covers only existing power plants. \nExcluding new sources would leave the company free to build as many new natural gas-burning power plants in the state as it wants\, locking in years of increased carbon pollution\, and further boosting demand for fracked gas and pipeline capacity. Dominion’s plans call for more than 9\,500 megawatts of new gas generation in Virginia\, equivalent in carbon impact to building eight average-sized coal plants in the state. \nMcAuliffe can do what Dominion wants\, or he can do the right thing for the climate. He can’t do both. \nAlso\, please note: we are also asking that during the press event we avoid having No Pipeline signs out – we want to focus attention just on the program\, which is about McAuliffe’s role in charting a long-term course for cutting carbon pollution from power plants.

This is what Dominion is calling a “Community Advisory Group.” We are tasked with giving them “advice” on what we want from a 41\,000 HP plus massive industrial compressor station that will pollute our air\, compromise our health and change our rural way of life forever. But we don’t want a compressor station! We want our lives to be free from the toxic emissions\, the constant noise\, the 200 ft 24 hour lights and the ongoing pervasive threats to our safety. We want a future! Please plan to come and let Dominion know that we don’t want to help them plan this monstrosity. We don’t want to see it here at all!   The meeting will be held at the Agricultural Center building in Buckingham Courthouse Village on Route 60. DESCRIPTION:If you haven’t signed up to be an intervenor\, we’re holding another workshop to help you do so.  Stop by any time between 1 and 5.  What is an “intervenor?” According to FERC’s Frequently Asked Questions\, “An intervenor is an official party to a proceeding and enjoys distinct advantages over those who only file comments. Intervenors have the right to: participate in hearings before FERC’s administrative law judges; file briefs; file for rehearing of a Commission decision; have legal standing in a Court of Appeals if they challenge the Commission’s final decision.” FERC notes\, “As a general rule\, you should intervene when you may be materially affected by FERC’s decision on a specific case\, project or policy. Intervention gives you the right to challenge FERC’s decisions in Court. Non-intervenors can not take the FERC to court.” Those materially affected include all landowners on the route\, and others with strong interests\, such as neighbors\, and businesses that fear direct impacts. The goal of this workshop is to assist people in registering as intervenors. More detailed FERC information on intervention is here.

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday\, June 10\, 2015\, 7:00 p.m.  Friends of Nelson Public Meeting at Rockfish Valley Community Center.  Many thanks to Donny Williams\, organizer with We Are Cove Point and Calvert Citizens for a Healthy Community-CCHC\, who spoke about the perils that have befallen Lusby\, Maryland as Dominion has aggressively and ruthlessly moved in to expand and convert Cove Point into the largest exporter of fracked natural gas on the East Coast. He gave us a great overview of Dominion’s Cove Point LNG export terminal – how it was born and its current status. His presentation offered us direct experience of how Dominion and the regulatory process treats small towns and the worries of their pesky populations.  Dominion has been intentionally vague about all of these gas infrastructure projects\, but as we learn more and get to know folks from groups outside of the ACP route\, it becomes clear that all of these projects are scarily intertwined. Our support of Cove Point\, Myersville\, and West Virginia are very important!

DESCRIPTION:Wednesday March 18: FERC Scoping Meeting\, 7 pm\, Nelson County High School. This was supposed to be our chance to express our concerns to FERC representatives face to face\, a critical opportunity for public input to the federal regulators responsible for granting approval or denial of the ACP. However\, when the meeting ended at 10:45 pm\, only 78 of the 203 people who signed up to speak had been able to do so\, even with the 3-minute time limit on speakers.
