SUMMARY:Hands Across Our Land
DESCRIPTION:Hands Across Our Land is a grassroots action designed to bring attention to the plight landowners and communities face at the hands of bullying\, multi-billion dollar corporations in their quest to build new fossil fuel infrastructure. We believe the rights of property ownership are fundamental to our democracy; that eminent domain should never be used for corporate gain and/or economic development. We believe the health\, safety and welfare of our families and communities are paramount.  We will not be bullied into submission by the energy industry which chooses greed over people\, shareholder profit over our environment. We will not become the energy industry’s sacrifice zones! \nInitiated in Nelson County by Free Nelson\, the first Hands Across Our Land actions were held on August 18\, 2015\, and thirty-five communities in 10 states participated\,.  The Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League (BREDL) became an integral partner with Free Nelson.  BREDL is now managing the annual Hands Across Our Land campaign\, and in 2016  plans to double\, perhaps even triple\, the 2015 participation in 2016. \nThis year Hands Across Our Land organizers have chosen to include communities who are facing the devastating affects being caused by coal ash contamination.  As energy companies rush to close their coal ash pounds\, billions of gallons of toxic coal ash wastewater are being dumped into our streams and rivers. These streams and rivers are the very same source for many water intake systems to municipal water supplies. The Environmental Protection Agency let us down when it refused to classify coal ash as a hazardous material knowing all the while it is radioactive and contains many heavy metals\, some known to be carcinogens. \nIn Nelson County\, actions will take place at the Stone Bridge on Route 250 on the Nelson County–Augusta County Line at 5:30 pm (click here for the event’s Facebook page) and at the Wingina Bridge on Route 56 on the Nelson County–Buckingham County line at 6:30 pm (click here for the event’s Facebook page). \nThere will also be an interfaith prayer service at 5:00 pm at Union Hill Baptist Church on Route 663 in Buckingham County.  Pastor Paul Wilson of Union Hill Baptist Church; Marion Kanour\, Rector of Grace Episcopal Church\, Massies Mill; and Swami Dayananda of the Yogaville community will be among those who will offer their prayers.  All are welcome to join this event. \nFurther information about other site-specific HAOL actions will be posted on the BREDL HAOL Web page.  Check there for details of an action near you.

SUMMARY:Dominion Resources Annual Shareholder Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Dominion Resources’ annual shareholder meeting will be held on Wednesday\, May 11th\, 2016\, in Columbia\, SC\, and a group of climate-concerned shareholders will be introducing five resolutions aimed at getting Dominion to clean up its act. Meanwhile\, dozens more activists will be rallying outside. \nWhether it’s Dominion’s push to build hundreds of miles of new fracked-gas pipeline\, its corner-cutting to dump toxic coal ash wastewater into our rivers\, or its attacks on rooftop solar\, it’s never been more clear: Dominion is the single biggest obstacle to setting a new direction for our energy future in Virginia. \nThat’s why a group of Dominion shareholders is pushing back. \nIf you own Dominion stock\, you can cast your vote for each resolution\, and even attend the meeting.  Click here to find out how you can help these activist shareholders. \nIf you don’t own Dominion stock\, join us for the rally outside!  RSVP to join us for the rally outside the meeting!

SUMMARY:Press Event: Save These Historic Resources
DESCRIPTION:Please join the Rockfish Valley Foundation (RVF)\, 1368 Rockfish Valley Highway\, Nellysford\, VA\, on Tuesday May 3\, 2016 at 10 a.m. for an event intended to create state-wide awareness for the archaeology site of the Coleman Mills and Old Wintergreen Village. On the program will be Preservation Virginia\, Nelson County Historical Society\, Nelson Board of Supervisor Allen Hale and the Rockfish Valley Foundation. The two historic and cultural resources have been recognized by Governor McAuliffe as Virginia Treasures and by Preservation Virginia as endangered sites. They are the center of the South Rockfish Valley Historic District. The Atlantic Coast Pipeline will destroy them. RVF has worked hard over the last year to achieve recognition for these historic resources\, and wants to take public their efforts to defend the Rockfish Valley and the culture and history of this special place from the destructive impacts of the proposed pipeline. TV and other media will be present\, so this is a great time to have a big crowd to protest the damage the pipeline would do.

SUMMARY:Cut Carbon Now Rally
DESCRIPTION:Join us on April 2\, 2016 from 1-1:15 pm at the Free Speech Wall on the Downtown Mall in Charlottesville for Cut Carbon Now\, a brief action with prominent speakers and a clear message! Sponsored by Appalachian Voices and 350.org\, this is a Day of Action in all parts of the Commonwealth\, calling on Governor McAuliffe to live up to his commitment to deliver to the people of Virginia a truly Clean Power Plan that cuts carbon pollution long-term and safeguards health and prosperity for generations to come. \nDominion Resources\, the Richmond-based parent company of Dominion Virginia Power\, is heavily invested in the natural gas sector\, primarily transmission and storage. That has led Dominion to lobby for an implementation plan that covers only existing power plants. \nExcluding new sources would leave the company free to build as many new natural gas-burning power plants in the state as it wants\, locking in years of increased carbon pollution\, and further boosting demand for fracked gas and pipeline capacity. Dominion’s plans call for more than 9\,500 megawatts of new gas generation in Virginia\, equivalent in carbon impact to building eight average-sized coal plants in the state. \nMcAuliffe can do what Dominion wants\, or he can do the right thing for the climate. He can’t do both. \nAlso\, please note: we are also asking that during the press event we avoid having No Pipeline signs out – we want to focus attention just on the program\, which is about McAuliffe’s role in charting a long-term course for cutting carbon pollution from power plants.

SUMMARY:Prayers Not Pipelines
DESCRIPTION:Bring Friends and family and join us for this community organized Prayers Not Pipelines event on Sunday\, October 25th\, 10-3PM at the Rockfish Valley Foundation/ Spruce Creek Gallery. \nImagine a “wall” of white gauzy fabric wrapped around the trees so that you can see through to the trees but blocked enough to imagine their loss. This wall will be on both sides of RT 151 and will be the length of the path of the proposed pipeline route\, 125 feet. In front of that white wall\, we will stand hand in hand with our no pipeline shirts. We will line both sides of Rt 151.  As we filter in and out to take turns\, we will pass out info and hand out flyers to residents and visitors. While the community is waiting their turn to be a part of the human chain along Rt 151\, participants can create their own prayer flag. There will be white squares of cloth available with markers and people can make their own statement\, intention\, artwork or prayer. The flags will be collected and sewed together on a line to create a giant prayer flag that will be posted along the road where the proposed pipeline would go. The goal of the event is to send out positive messages to the community and the forest: blessings\, protection and prayers going out to the world that this is a protected and sacred place. \n\nPlease sign up to stand along Rt 151 in opposition to the ACP by going to this link: http://doodle.com/poll/a38kt85m8qc375ni
