SUMMARY:Friends of Nelson Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Sunday October 20\, 2019 – The Nelson Center\, gather at 5:30\, meeting begins at 6:00.  Ted Glick\, from Beyond Extreme Energy (BXE)\, will be our featured speaker\, and will show a short film followed by discussion.  We’ll also have announcements and updates.  This is a kid-friendly event\, and there will be an art station run by BXE’s Maple Osterbrink. \nJoin activists from Beyond Extreme Energy (BXE) on their FERC Into FREC roadshow! BXE is traveling from the shalefields of Pennsylvania down through the path of the MVP and ACP pipelines in West Virginia and Virginia. BXE members will screen their short film “FERC Doesn’t Work” and hold a community discussion on the fight to turn the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) into the Federal Renewable Energy Commission (FREC). FERC is the federal agency responsible for the regulation of all fossil fuel infrastructure and pipelines that cross state lines. As such FERC is a lynchpin in the nationwide movement against fossil fuels and for climate justice! \nTed Glick has been a progressive activist\, organizer and writer since 1968. He has prioritized the climate crisis issue since 2004 and was one of the founders of Beyond Extreme Energy in 2014. Following retirement after nine years as the National Campaign Coordinator for the Chesapeake Climate Action Network\, he has worked since as a volunteer with BXE and several local and state organizations in New Jersey fighting climate disruption and the expansion of new fossil fuel infrastructure. Since 2000 he has written a nationally-distributed Future Hope column of political\, social and cultural commentary. \nMaple Osterbrink has volunteered for peace\, justice and earth conservation since the 1960’s. She “took the earth-conservation pledge as a young girl scout and has held to it.” She retired from several “almost-careers” to North Carolina and is helping out many organizations including BXE\, APPPL\, Workers’ Assembly and the Raging Grannies. She worked to preserve wetlands in New Hampshire in the mid-90’s as a town conservation commissioner. She is “sick of the corruption\, theft and poisoning of democracy\, peace\, water\, food and sustainability.” As an artist she will have mini-projects to do with children\, or adults\, during events.

SUMMARY:Our Air\, Our Health\, Our Common Future: The Fight to Save Union Hill
DESCRIPTION:Our Air\, Our Health\, Our Common Future: The Fight to Save Union Hill \nSaturday\, September 7\, 2019 at 1 PM – 4 PM\nUnion Hill\, Virginia \nHosted by Appalachian Voices\, Sierra Club Virginia Chapter\, Virginia Interfaith Power and Light\, POWHR\, Water Is Life. Protect It. \nJoin friends\, neighbors and Virginians leading the fight to protect our communities against corporate polluters for a Town Hall to address this important question: What kind of Commonwealth are we? \nRefreshments will be served immediately following the event program. Please register on our Eventbrite web page (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/our-air-our-health-our-common-future-the-fight-to-save-union-hill-tickets-69378548105) so you have all the details and directions to the event (and to give us an accurate head count for food!). \nThe Town Hall will take place on the ancestral land of Taylor Harper\, a former slave who bought a portion of the plantation land he once toiled in Union Hill. This community has been targeted for a massive\, dangerous fracked-gas compressor station that would be part of the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline – a highly controversial\, expensive and unneeded project. \nYou’ll hear from several Harper descendants as well as other Union Hill landowners who likewise trace their ancestry to the courageous women and men who founded this historic community\, and other area residents. The Town Hall will also feature speakers from the Southern Environmental Law Center and Chesapeake Bay Foundation who are representing community members in efforts to stop the compressor station. \nThe fight for Union Hill is part of a broader struggle for environmental justice in Virginia. It also includes the Atlantic Coast Pipeline\, the Mountain Valley Pipeline\, the Chickahominy power plant\, the mega dump (called “Green Ridge”) in Cumberland County and other projects that threaten vulnerable communities. Together\, communities across the commonwealth are calling on our elected leaders to take meaningful action to develop sound environmental policies that leave no community behind.

SUMMARY:Cancelled - The Rights of Nature for the Community
DESCRIPTION:THIS MEETING HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nWednesday\, March 20\, 2019 at 7 PM – 9 PM\, Powhatan County Public Library\, 2270 Mann Rd\, Powhatan\, Virginia 23139. \nIf you are interested in protecting your county from environment harms\, come learn how we can work together to protect the Rights of Nature. We will have the opportunity to hear Ben Price\, from the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF)\, share information about the concept of Community Bill of Rights (CBOR) for our local communities and how to protect the rights of nature. 200 municipalities nationwide have already passed CBORs and over 3 dozen communities have protected the rights of nature in their local communities. Check out the CELDF website for more information. (www.CELDF.org) \nThe Constitution of Virginia says it is our right to clean air and clean water. However\, our rights conflict with the state and federal laws. As a systemic problem\, the law is built around the needs of the monied corporations. The law is on their side. We are looking at legalized harm. \nActivists in this movement often view the environment as the next frontier in humanity’s expanding moral circle: over the centuries\, we’ve extended rights to more and more beings (e.g. slaves\, women)\, so why shouldn’t nature itself be next? \nThe Lake Erie Bill of Rights (LEBOR)\, an amendment to the city charter of Toledo\, has just been voted on and passed. It is the first rights-based legislation aimed at protecting a whole US ecosystem: the lake\, its tributaries\, and the many species connected to it\, including humans! \nENOUGH IS ENOUGH\, PRESERVE VA rejects the conventional Western way of relating to nature — as property that is there for the taking\, as an object rather than a subject. We recognize that we are going to have to work within the existing Western legal system\, like the LEBOR mentioned above\, if we want that to change. \nWe are betting that the best strategy for protecting the environment is to stretch our society’s understanding of what can have rights. If corporations have rights\, why not nature? It’s a bold bet\, but with climate change decimating the planet at such a ferocious rate\, it is the kind of innovative thinking we need. \nThe LEBOR isn’t without precedent! It’s part of the nascent worldwide Rights of Nature movement\, which has notched several victories in the past dozen years. The Rights of Nature have been included in the constitution of Ecuador. Rivers and parks have already won legal rights in countries like Colombia\, India\, and New Zealand. \nJoin us to learn more about how to bring this paradigm shift to your local community!

SUMMARY:Little Pink House - Special Showing
DESCRIPTION:WHERE: The Regal Stonefield\, 1954 Swanson Dr\, Charlottesville\nWHEN: Thursday\, June 28 at 7:30 p.m.\nTICKETS: Tickets are $12 general admission\, and proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Friends of Nelson. You must buy your tickets online; no tickets will be sold at the door. Purchase tickets here: https://www.tugg.com/events/little-pink-house-dauw \nBased on a true story\, a small-town paramedic named Susette Kelo leaves a bad marriage\, and starts over in a new town. She buys a rundown cottage with a gorgeous water view. She fixes it up and paints it pink. Then she discovers powerful politicians want to bulldoze her blue-collar neighborhood for the benefit of a multi-billion dollar corporation. With the help of a young lawyer named Scott Bullock\, Susette emerges as the reluctant leader of her neighbors in an epic battle that goes all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court\, inspires a nation\, and helps millions of Americans protect their homes. \nIn 2005\, the nation was shocked by the Supreme Court’s ruling in Kelo vs. New London. In the judgment\, the court said that a local government could forcibly seize people’s homes\, through eminent domain\, in order to transfer the property to a major corporation for development. The response was immediate. Across the country\, states passed legislation and amended constitutions to curtail the power of eminent domain.  In 2012\, the people of Virginia spoke out overwhelmingly when more than 2.6 million citizens (74.45% of votes cast) approved amending the state constitution to prohibit eminent domain from being invoked if the “primary use is for private gain\, private benefit\, private enterprise\, increasing jobs\, increasing tax revenue or economic development.” \nPlaintiff Susette Kelo’s fight has been dramatized in this new film\, Little Pink House\, starring the brilliant\, Oscar-nominated actress Catherine Keener as Kelo. \nThe film is being distributed in an unorthodox manner. Local people sign up to bring it to their town and\, if enough tickets are sold\, a screening proceeds at a selected local theater. We are pleased to announce that Doug Hornig has secured a showing of the film in Charlottesville: \nWHERE: The Regal Stonefield\, 1954 Swanson Dr\, Charlottesville\nWHEN: Thursday\, June 28 at 7:30 p.m.\nTICKETS: Tickets are $12 general admission\, and proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Friends of Nelson. Many of us have been fighting them for several years now\, and continue to do so. \nWe hope to use this event to help educate the public about the importance of fighting eminent domain abuse. Following the film\, there will be a panel discussion and Q&A featuring: John Kramer – Institute for Justice\, Chuck Lollar – Attorney specializing in eminent domain cases\, Richard Averitt – Property owner impacted by Atlantic Coast Pipeline\, Joyce Burton – Board member\, Friends of Nelson\, a nonprofit dedicated to stopping this unnecessary pipeline. \nJoin us – and bring family\, friends\, and neighbors! SUMMARY:Pipelines in [so called] VA?! NO ~fracking~ WAY!
DESCRIPTION:Hosted by Virginia Student Environmental Coalition\, Charlottesville\nTuesday\, April 24 at 8 PM – 9 PM\nUniversity of Virginia\, Old Cabell Hall\, Room 107 \nMVP? ACP? Monopods? Tree sits? Resistance camps? Arrests?!\nWondering what all of this is about? \nFor years\, the profit hungry Dominion Energy\, Duke\, & EQT have been pushing two fracked gas pipeline projects on lands stretching from West Virginia through Virginia to North Carolina. Throughout the process\, politicians and regulators have consistently turned their backs\, tuning out the voices of those defending the land and the water. But countless courageous communities of resistance have fought back along both proposed routes\, successfully delaying construction… but not without sacrifice. \nVSEC Charlottesville will host a gathering (featuring *desserts*) for the Charlottesville community to catch our breath and find out how we move forward. Please come this Tuesday evening to learn more about these pipelines\, acts of resistance\, and histories of these lands. Also\, *ahem* COME EAT HOMEMADE DESSERTS!!!!

SUMMARY:Pipeline Summit
DESCRIPTION:The Allegheny-Blue Ridge Alliance (ABRA) and the POWHR Coalition will co-host a Pipeline Summit on Saturday\, November 12\, 2016\, in Natural Bridge\, VA. The 10 am to 4 pm meeting is designed to aid participants working to defeat the pipelines proposed across the Allegheny-Blue Ridge region with improved information\, messages and skills to carry on their efforts in 2017. \nThere is a $10 charge for lunch and beverages (a wide choice of sandwiches and salads will be available) to be paid upon your arrival. \nThe need for reforming property rights laws\, particularly eminent domain\, will be a major subject addressed. Participating in this important discussion will be: \n\nLarry Shapiro\, Associate Director for Program Development\, Rockefeller Family Fund\, New York City. He is also President of the Board of the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEFFA)\, the organization that released a study in April on the risks of pipeline expansions in the Appalachian region. Mr. Shapiro convened a national conference in June on “Pipelines and Eminent Domain.” He will be discussing a new initiative that seeks to reform the ability of pipeline companies to utilize eminent domain laws.\nRichard Averitt\, CEO at Digital ReLab and a Nelson County\, VA resident. Mr. Averitt has been significantly impacted by the proposed ACP. A 100-acre property he and his father\, Dick Averitt\, purchased in the Rockfish Valley portion of Nelson County\, VA to build a resort is in the path of the ACP\, thus preventing the resort development from proceeding. The resort would create 50 full-time and 50-75 part-time jobs\, significantly more permanent employment than the ACP would create in the entire Commonwealth of Virginia.\nKate Wofford\, Executive Director\, Shenandoah Valley Network\, an organization whose mission is to maintain healthy and productive rural landscapes and communities\, to protect and restore natural resources\, and to strengthen and sustain the region’s agricultural economy. Ms. Wofford will discuss the environmental easement issue in Virginia and also serve as the panel’s moderator.\n\nClick Here to Register
