As members of the Allegheny-Blue Ridge Alliance\, Friends of Nelson and our sister groups are standing up to protect our region’s rights to clean water and the rule of environmental law. You’ll walk away knowing what to look for and report on\, if construction does reach us.

SUMMARY:Climate Action Team Meeting and Activist Training - Shenandoah Valley
DESCRIPTION:What: Climate Action Team Meeting and Activist Training – Shenandoah Valley\nWhen: Monday\, August 13th\, 6:30 – 8:30 pm\nWhere: Staunton Public Library (1 Churchville Ave\, Staunton VA 24401) \nRSVP: Click here to RSVP. Invite all your friends!\n \nAt this climate action meeting you will get an overview of the most dire threats that Virginia faces — like fracked-gas pipelines and compressor stations — and what we can do to stop them.  \nThen\, we will look at the most pressing climate solutions to cut greenhouse gas emissions and get Virginia join the other states in the country that are taking the climate fight into their own hands. \n \nParamount among these steps is for Virginia to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). By joining RGGI\, big polluters like Dominion will finally have to pay for all of the harm that they are doing to our climate and communities. This will bring up to $200 million back to Virginia each year\, which can be reinvested into coastal resiliency and clean energy. \n \nIt is time to let our Virginia leaders know that we want solutions.

SUMMARY:CSI Drone Training - Buckingham
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Buckingham and the Allegheny-Blue Ridge Alliance are excited to announce the date of our first Buckingham Pipeline Compliance Surveillance Initiative (CSI) drone monitoring training on Saturday\, August 4\, from 10:00am – 2:00pm at Union Hill Baptist Church. \nThe purpose of this training is to introduce volunteers to the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)\, or drones\, to monitor construction and preconstruction activities of the fracked gas pipelines that threaten our communities. \nTopics to be covered are as follows: \n\nWhy use drones?\nWhich drones can you use?\nFlying Safely: Do’s & Don’t’s\nFlying Legally: Rules of the air\nWhat and where to monitor?\nTaking useful photos and videos\nAdvanced mapping missions\nNetworking with your neighbors\n\nThe CSI will have two DJI Mavic Pro drones present for demonstration. If you own or have access to your own drone\, please bring it with you! \nThis training will include an indoor classroom-style presentation in the church Lounge followed by a flight and mapping-mission demonstration in the soccer field outside. Lunch will be provided\, so please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions. \nImportant: It is our hope with this program to create a network of citizen aerial monitors across our region who can respond to and document construction non-compliance and environmental degradation at the hands of ACP and MVP developers. This training is not an end-all-be-all for how to fly\, you’ll need to practice flying on your own to become proficient. If you cannot attend due to scheduling conflicts or distance\, don’t fret\, we plan on holding more of these trainings in the coming weeks and months in different communities along the proposed ACP route. We also plan to have a live-stream video of this training so stay tuned for updates on how to access that. \nSpace is limited to 50 people. \nPlease direct any questions or concerns to Ben Cunningham\, at silvercunning@gmail.com or 434-882-1893.

Just show up anytime between 10 and 4 with whatever questions you might have about the CSI program and Ben will do his best to answer them and show you the ropes of the Online Mapping System. All are welcome\, coffee and snacks provided! \nBut wait\, there’s more! \nA group walkthrough of the Online Mapping System will be broadcast on Facebook at 2pm for the benefit of all you good folks who can’t make it out in person on Friday. If you miss it live\, don’t fret\, its recorded for later viewing. During the Live broadcast Ben will run through what the CSI is and how the Online Mapping System can be used as a powerful tool as we fight to stop the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. Ben will discuss all the different layers of information provided on the GIS and how even you can make quality printable maps for use in the field or offline. Following the Walkthrough there will be a Q&A about all things CSI and CSI Online Mapping System. \nQuestions can be emailed to Ben at pipelineincident@gmail.com with the subject line “CSI Q&A”. Questions may also of course be commented on the livestream if you are watching from elsewhere.

SUMMARY:Workshop: Native Plant Identification and Rescue
DESCRIPTION:Please join Blackberry Botanicals for a Native Plant Identification Workshop and Plant Rescue Training on Thursday April 12\, 2018 from 6pm – 8:30pm\, in the Rockfish Lounge at Rockfish Valley Community Center. This training session is for Landowners and Volunteers who would like to volunteer to rescue and transplant our native medicinal plant heritage. FREE and open to the public. Donations are accepted and appreciated. \nBlackberry Botanicals (BB) in conjunction with United Plant Savers is in the process of coordinating several plant rescue operations due to the destruction imminent in the path of several fracked gas pipelines that are coming through West Virginia and Virginia. The Appalachian mountains are home to over 500 verified varieties of medicinal plants many of which grow nowhere else in the world. BB is preserving these plants\, and preserving the rich and varied medicinal heritage of our Appalachian region. \nThe land clearing proposals and current practices observed during pipeline construction will negatively impact forest and wetland medicinals. This is a critical time to preserve these plants\, many of which will not survive if the controlled environment in which they flourish is damaged. Blackberry Botanicals (BB)\, along with a crew of dedicated volunteers\, are digging and replanting medicinals with growers who are actively participating in managed forestland plantings with verifiable practices of conservation. \nFollowing the April 12 informational meeting and training session\, BB will schedule several days to visit Nelson County in May 2018 to meet with interested landowners\, to walk the proposed pipeline route on landowner property\, and identify and mark native medicinal plants on the property. BB will return in June 2018 for several scheduled volunteer dig days. During these digs\, native medicinal plants will be carefully and sustainably harvested from their current location\, and either planted on the landowners property outside of the proposed pipeline route\, or will be safely transplanted to another local plant sanctuary or to the United Plant Savers Sanctuary in Ohio. \nIf you are a landowner or a potential volunteer in Nelson County and are interested in learning more\, please contact Sara Agelasto at sagelasto@gmail.com. If you would like to contact Blackberry Botanicals directly\, please email blackberrybotanical@gmail.com or call Beth at 304-923-3716.  (Blackberry Botanicals will have information at the Friends of Nelson Public Meeting on April 11 at RVCC.)

SUMMARY:Non-Violent Direct Action 101
DESCRIPTION:This strategy session led by members of No ACP will last about 2 hours\, followed by a Q&A discussion. Several interactive activities are included in the training. We’ll talk about roles in the resistance – both individual roles within organizations\, and community roles within statewide resistance. We’ll explore tactical escalation along a timeline of resistance. Other topics include spectrum of allyship; risk assessment; movement sustainability and messaging. We’ll do our best to answer questions about specific tactics and relationship of the ACP to the greater (inter)national fight against pipelines.  The presentation and discussion will thrive on active participation. Our design will assure an equal foundation for understanding direct action while the community input throughout will illuminate pathways to resistance and fill in strategic or tactical gaps through community-specific knowledge.  More info/material may be added to the agenda in the coming week so stay tuned!

SUMMARY:Pipeline Summit
DESCRIPTION:The Allegheny-Blue Ridge Alliance (ABRA) and the POWHR Coalition will co-host a Pipeline Summit on Saturday\, November 12\, 2016\, in Natural Bridge\, VA. The 10 am to 4 pm meeting is designed to aid participants working to defeat the pipelines proposed across the Allegheny-Blue Ridge region with improved information\, messages and skills to carry on their efforts in 2017. \nThere is a $10 charge for lunch and beverages (a wide choice of sandwiches and salads will be available) to be paid upon your arrival. \nThe need for reforming property rights laws\, particularly eminent domain\, will be a major subject addressed. Participating in this important discussion will be: \n\nLarry Shapiro\, Associate Director for Program Development\, Rockefeller Family Fund\, New York City. He is also President of the Board of the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEFFA)\, the organization that released a study in April on the risks of pipeline expansions in the Appalachian region. Mr. Shapiro convened a national conference in June on “Pipelines and Eminent Domain.” He will be discussing a new initiative that seeks to reform the ability of pipeline companies to utilize eminent domain laws.\nRichard Averitt\, CEO at Digital ReLab and a Nelson County\, VA resident. Mr. Averitt has been significantly impacted by the proposed ACP. A 100-acre property he and his father\, Dick Averitt\, purchased in the Rockfish Valley portion of Nelson County\, VA to build a resort is in the path of the ACP\, thus preventing the resort development from proceeding. The resort would create 50 full-time and 50-75 part-time jobs\, significantly more permanent employment than the ACP would create in the entire Commonwealth of Virginia.\nKate Wofford\, Executive Director\, Shenandoah Valley Network\, an organization whose mission is to maintain healthy and productive rural landscapes and communities\, to protect and restore natural resources\, and to strengthen and sustain the region’s agricultural economy. Ms. Wofford will discuss the environmental easement issue in Virginia and also serve as the panel’s moderator.\n\nClick Here to Register
