SUMMARY:People’s Caravan for Clean Air and Water
DESCRIPTION:People’s Caravan For Clean Air and Water’s NO MVP NO ACP Rally \nAt this event\, we want to send a message to Governor Northam\, DEQ\, and the SWCB to stop construction and do a stream by stream analysis. Northam needs to call for the SWCB to pull the permits and direct DEQ to stop work now! At their next meeting\, SWCB needs to pull the permits. \nWe want to tell Northam to reappoint Roberta Kellam to the State Water Control Board. \nWe want to highlight what the pipelines mean to the people of Union Hill who are facing the building of a compressor station 70 feet from their homes. The compressor station has a kill zone which Dominion cannot even define. We want to highlight the danger to the drinking of water of over 400\,000 people. \nWe want the need for the Southside Connector Project in Norfolk and Chesapeake\, to be reexamined. With gas demand being flat\, is it worth constructing this 24 inch\, fracked gas\, expansion pipeline through neighborhoods and within the potential incineration zones of several schools? This is unacceptable\, our children should be safe in their classrooms and families should be safe in their homes. \nWe have to continue to shine the light on how bad the Moutain Valley Pipeline and Atlantic Coast Pipelines for the environment\, for peoples\, health. \nAt the same time\, we also want to tell the world that we want Renewable Energy. \nWe’re doing this on a weekend hoping lots of people will STAND UP FIGHT BACK. This is everyone’s issue not just the people who are directly in the path of the pipelines. \nSo bring a sign and join us in sending a message that Virginia is not going to put up with this. \nHosted by Hampton Roads Green Party and 19 others

SUMMARY:Our Air Our Lives
DESCRIPTION:August 16\, 2018\, Buckingham County Administration Building \nPrayer Song Circle & Virginia Water Flags baptism 5-6 pm – before the DEQ Briefing on the Draft Air Permit for the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline Compressor Station at Union Hill 6-8 pm. Peter Francisco Auditorium\, Buckingham County Administration Building\, 13380 W. James Anderson Highway\, Buckingham\, VA. At the briefing\, can ask questions\, but not comment. \nBring a small amount of water from a waterway you love. \nWe can stop the proposed 54\,000 + horse power ACP Compressor Station that would endanger and diminish the health and land values of all residents of Buckingham County and destroy the lives of the historic African American community of Union Hill. \nThe next challenge is to deny the air permit for the compressor station. Without the compressor station\, the ACP\, a robbery of and threat to all Virginians\, cannot be built. \nThis compressor station\, a giant one\, even by industry standards would bring loud constant noise and release toxic poisons into Buckingham’s air and water. The health of children is particularly vulnerable to the methane\, formaldehyde\, arsenic\, benzene\, xylene and other compounds the compressor will regularly release. The compressor station would create a fire and explosion hazard completely beyond the capacity of distant volunteer firefighters. The station has few staff on site and would be built on a former slave plantation atop the unmarked slave graves of Union Hill ancestors. \nLIFT UP YOUR VOICE: The public comment period for the compressor station draft air permit is August 8\, 2018 until September 11\, 2018. \nIf you cannot make the the briefing\, the PUBLIC HEARING is even more important: Tuesday\, September 11\, 4-9:30 pm\,Buckingham County Middle School\, 1184 High School Road. Hearing begins at 5\, but join us for prayer\, song and food outside at 4. \n*IF YOU CANNOT GO: Write via e-mail\, fax or post. Submittals must include your name\, mailing address and telephone number. Contact: Ann Regn; Phone: (804) 698-4442; Postal Mail: Piedmont Regional Office\, RE: Buckingham Compressor Station\, 4949-A Cox Rd\, Glen Allen\, VA 23060; E-mail:\nairdivision1@deq.virginia.gov; Fax: (804) 527-5106. SUMMARY:Climate Action Team Meeting and Activist Training - Shenandoah Valley
DESCRIPTION:What: Climate Action Team Meeting and Activist Training – Shenandoah Valley\nWhen: Monday\, August 13th\, 6:30 – 8:30 pm\nWhere: Staunton Public Library (1 Churchville Ave\, Staunton VA 24401) \nRSVP: Click here to RSVP. Invite all your friends!\n \nAt this climate action meeting you will get an overview of the most dire threats that Virginia faces — like fracked-gas pipelines and compressor stations — and what we can do to stop them.  \nThen\, we will look at the most pressing climate solutions to cut greenhouse gas emissions and get Virginia join the other states in the country that are taking the climate fight into their own hands. \n \nParamount among these steps is for Virginia to join the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative (RGGI). By joining RGGI\, big polluters like Dominion will finally have to pay for all of the harm that they are doing to our climate and communities. This will bring up to $200 million back to Virginia each year\, which can be reinvested into coastal resiliency and clean energy. \n \nIt is time to let our Virginia leaders know that we want solutions.

SUMMARY:Parkway Picnic to Protest the Pipelines
DESCRIPTION:Thursday\, August 9 at 5 PM – 8 PM\, Blue Ridge Pkwy\, Bent Mountain\, VA 24059 \nJoin Preserve Floyd and friends as we picnic and protest the pipelines at 5 pm on August 9 between the Blue Ridge Parkway (BRP) mile marker 136 and the 221 Bent Mtn entrance to the BRP. Bring your families! Bring your friends! Enjoy the summer with us and take a stand for justice. \nWe’ll make sandwiches and cupcakes! We’ll have games and songs! Bring an (easy) side dish\, a dessert\, drinks\, musical instruments\, blankets or chairs for picnicking upon\, extra veggies from your garden to share…or just yourself. And a protest sign! \nPreserve Floyd turned four this summer\, so this celebration of community\, effective action and resistance is intended to be a birthday bash. Any and all are welcome to join! We especially hope to support our fellow grassroots Preserve groups with some food\, fellowship and continued solidarity. \nPlease bring relics from our movement that will show how we’ve grown: yard signs\, flags\, posters\, etc. You can also make new ones for this protest! We encourage you to investigate what’s happening with the MVP and ACP the week of Aug 9th and structure your messaging accordingly. \nin 2014\, Preserve Floyd said “Stop the PipelineS.” We meant it. Do not let the construction fool you–there are still plenty of ways that Virginia can step up and STOP the environmental and social injustice that the MVP and ACP are perpetuating upon the people. \nSo exercise your first amendment rights to peaceful protest\, enjoy the company of your communities\, and come picnic with us!

SUMMARY:The Air We Breathe Community Meeting
DESCRIPTION:*COMMUNITY MEETING: Monday\, August 6\, 5:00-6:30 pm\, Union Hill Church\, with potluck to follow. 1496 Union Hill Road (Route 663)\, Buckingham\, VA 23921. Learn how to challenge and comment on the draft air permit for the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline compressor station. \nACP & UNION HILL COMPRESSOR STATION: BAD DEAL – NOT DONE DEAL: It is still possible to stop the proposed 54\,000 + horse power ACP Compressor Station that would endanger and diminish the health and land values of all residents of Buckingham County and destroy the lives of the historic African American community of Union Hill. The permits for the pipeline and its compressor station are not complete and the project is currently being challenged in the courts. Dominion’s false claims of safety have begun. The next challenge is to deny the air permit for the compressor station. Without the compressor station\, the ACP\, a robbery of and threat to all Virginians\, cannot be built. \nTHE AIR WE BREATHE: This compressor station\, a giant one\, even by industry standards would bring loud constant noise and release toxic poisons into Buckingham’s air and water. The health of children is particularly vulnerable to the methane\, formaldehyde\, arsenic\, benzene\, xylene and other compounds the compressor will regularly release. Above and underground storage tanks create a fire and explosion hazard completely beyond the capacity of distant volunteer firefighters. The station has few staff on site and would be built on a former slave plantation atop the unmarked slave graves of Union Hill ancestors.  Please note that although the information provided by the Va Department of Environmental Quality puts this compressor station in the minor category\, that is a technical term based on the amount of pollutants it can emit. The environmental regulations do not protect our air water and health; they allow ACP to pollute up to very high levels that impact human and all life\, especially those most vulnerable\, the elderly and children. \nLIFT UP YOUR VOICE: The public comment period for the compressor station draft air permit is August 8\, 2018 until September 11\, 2018. Join neighbors who have researched the facts and bring yourself to the important work of protecting your water\, air\, health and right to own your own land. Any time you have is enough\, is needed. \nFor more information\, Friends of Buckingham phone contact: 434 969 3229 ( Chad)

SUMMARY:CSI Drone Training - Buckingham
DESCRIPTION:Friends of Buckingham and the Allegheny-Blue Ridge Alliance are excited to announce the date of our first Buckingham Pipeline Compliance Surveillance Initiative (CSI) drone monitoring training on Saturday\, August 4\, from 10:00am – 2:00pm at Union Hill Baptist Church. \nThe purpose of this training is to introduce volunteers to the use of unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs)\, or drones\, to monitor construction and preconstruction activities of the fracked gas pipelines that threaten our communities. \nTopics to be covered are as follows: \n\nWhy use drones?\nWhich drones can you use?\nFlying Safely: Do’s & Don’t’s\nFlying Legally: Rules of the air\nWhat and where to monitor?\nTaking useful photos and videos\nAdvanced mapping missions\nNetworking with your neighbors\n\nThe CSI will have two DJI Mavic Pro drones present for demonstration. If you own or have access to your own drone\, please bring it with you! \nThis training will include an indoor classroom-style presentation in the church Lounge followed by a flight and mapping-mission demonstration in the soccer field outside. Lunch will be provided\, so please let us know if you have any dietary restrictions. \nImportant: It is our hope with this program to create a network of citizen aerial monitors across our region who can respond to and document construction non-compliance and environmental degradation at the hands of ACP and MVP developers. This training is not an end-all-be-all for how to fly\, you’ll need to practice flying on your own to become proficient. If you cannot attend due to scheduling conflicts or distance\, don’t fret\, we plan on holding more of these trainings in the coming weeks and months in different communities along the proposed ACP route. We also plan to have a live-stream video of this training so stay tuned for updates on how to access that. \nSpace is limited to 50 people. \nPlease direct any questions or concerns to Ben Cunningham\, at silvercunning@gmail.com or 434-882-1893.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Staunton Board of Zoning Appeals Public Hearing
DESCRIPTION:UPDATE:  According to the July 6\, 2018\, Staunton News Leader\, the July 10 hearing was postponed by the Board of Zoning Appeals to meet requirements as described in the Code of Virginia for the appropriate advertisement of such hearings. A new hearing date will be set. \nThe Augusta County Alliance is calling for the community’s help to keep Dominion honest as it continues pushing ahead on its plans for this destructive\, unsafe\, and unnecessary pipeline project. They need your attendance at the Staunton Board of Zoning Appeals meeting\, Tuesday\, July 10\, 2018\, 2 p.m. in the Staunton City Council Chambers (116 W Beverley St.\, Staunton\, VA\, 24401). \nApparently Dominion has been storing heavy construction equipment\, buses\, and supplies for pipeline construction on a lot owned by Staunton Tractor off Richmond Avenue. The city of Staunton informed Staunton Tractor that creating a “contractor’s equipment storage area” is not a permitted use at that site. In a notice of violation sent to Staunton Tractor\, the city’s Planning & Zoning Division noted: “As we understand it\, this equipment is not part of your inventory for sale and is not present for repair work to be done on it. This part of the property is being used essentially as a contractors’ establishment\, serving as an operation staging site for a contractor.” \nStaunton Tractor has appealed the notice of violation\, asserting that the land is grandfathered in for storage of equipment and that the equipment is being stored there so that it can be repaired and maintained. \nThe matter will be heard by the Staunton Board of Zoning Appeals on Tuesday\, July 10 at 2 p.m. in the Staunton City Council Chambers. This is a public hearing and your comments are important! Remind Staunton Tractor and Dominion that rules are there for a reason and everyone has to play by the same rule book. \nCome out and voice your opinion! \nFor further information\, email info@augustacountyalliance.org. \n\nThis entry was posted in Construction and Storage Yards\, Events\, Notice of V

Purchase tickets here: https://www.tugg.com/events/little-pink-house-dauw \nBased on a true story\, a small-town paramedic named Susette Kelo leaves a bad marriage\, and starts over in a new town. She buys a rundown cottage with a gorgeous water view. She fixes it up and paints it pink. Then she discovers powerful politicians want to bulldoze her blue-collar neighborhood for the benefit of a multi-billion dollar corporation. With the help of a young lawyer named Scott Bullock\, Susette emerges as the reluctant leader of her neighbors in an epic battle that goes all the way to the U.S. Supreme Court\, inspires a nation\, and helps millions of Americans protect their homes. \nIn 2005\, the nation was shocked by the Supreme Court’s ruling in Kelo vs. New London. In the judgment\, the court said that a local government could forcibly seize people’s homes\, through eminent domain\, in order to transfer the property to a major corporation for development. The response was immediate. Across the country\, states passed legislation and amended constitutions to curtail the power of eminent domain.  In 2012\, the people of Virginia spoke out overwhelmingly when more than 2.6 million citizens (74.45% of votes cast) approved amending the state constitution to prohibit eminent domain from being invoked if the “primary use is for private gain\, private benefit\, private enterprise\, increasing jobs\, increasing tax revenue or economic development.” \nPlaintiff Susette Kelo’s fight has been dramatized in this new film\, Little Pink House\, starring the brilliant\, Oscar-nominated actress Catherine Keener as Kelo. \nThe film is being distributed in an unorthodox manner. Local people sign up to bring it to their town and\, if enough tickets are sold\, a screening proceeds at a selected local theater. We are pleased to announce that Doug Hornig has secured a showing of the film in Charlottesville: \nWHERE: The Regal Stonefield\, 1954 Swanson Dr\, Charlottesville\nWHEN: Thursday\, June 28 at 7:30 p.m.\nTICKETS: Tickets are $12 general admission\, and proceeds from ticket sales will benefit Friends of Nelson. Many of us have been fighting them for several years now\, and continue to do so. \nWe hope to use this event to help educate the public about the importance of fighting eminent domain abuse. SUMMARY:Public Hearing: Water from Lake Monocan for ACP
DESCRIPTION:On Thursday June 21\, 2018\, at 2pm Nelson County Service Authority will hold a public hearing on the proposed water rates in the proposed contract between the Service Authority and Dominion. The contract would allow the Service Authority to sell 40\,000 gallons per day of Wintergreen’s Lake Monocan water to Dominion to build the Atlantic Coast Pipeline\, specifically for the horizontal directional drilling (HDD) under the Blue Ridge Parkway at Reeds Gap. That’s 29 million gallons of water Dominion wants to buy over the next 2 years to build ACP and use for drilling fluid. \nAccording to the May 23\, 2018\, article in the Nelson County Times reporting on the Service Authority’s meeting on May 17\, which yielded no final decisions on a contract to provide water to the ACP for construction\, the board could vote on the contract following the public hearing. A public hearing is required to set the special rates for ACP. The ACP engineer attending the May 17 meeting said the water would be used for HDD\, but could be used for other aspects of construction\, and the water used as part of the HDD drilling fluid will be “hauled off.” [How? where? what will be done to purify it?]

SUMMARY:Rally in Roanoke: Call for SWCB Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Citizen observers for the Mountain Valley Watch program have documented and reported as many as 20 erosion control violations to the Department of Environmental Quality since mid-April 2018. Yet DEQ has not issued any violation notices or warnings to the contractor or MVP LLC. The number and severity of problems should require an immediate investigation into the reported violations\, yet DEQ officials denied the existence of violations and problems during a recent court hearing in Roanoke. Virginia residents are justifiably concerned that DEQ is not fulfilling its responsibility to correct and enforce serious violations of state laws. \nA growing number of both individuals and groups are urging the State Water Control Board to immediately hold a meeting to determine the adequacy of the Army Corps’ Nationwide Permit 12 to protect the Blue Ridge region’s rivers\, streams\, and drinking water. The Board is not currently scheduled to meet until August 21 to consider the adequacy of the federal permit\, but in light of the ongoing problems and the daily\, direct harm to state waters from pipeline construction activities\, a decision on the permit cannot wait until late August. \nThere will be a rally with speakers to call for a prompt SWCB meeting on Monday\, June 18\, 2018 at 2:00 pm\, Wasena Park\, Roanoke\, VA (near Vic Thomas Greenway bridge by the Roanoke River). \nSpeakers include: \n\nDelegate Sam Rasoul\nRussell Chisholm\, Preserve Giles\nCynthia Munley Preserve Salem\nDr. Tina Smusz\, MD\, MPH\, health educator\nMary Beth Coffey\, landowner\nJason Shelton\, Mountain Valley Watch

SUMMARY:The Defenders: Protest Against Pipelines
DESCRIPTION:Help fund “The Defenders” – a massive protest sculpture symbolizing their brave resistance to fossil fuel destruction. \nErected in steel\, standing 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide\, “The Defenders” will make a strong anti-pipeline statement across the Valley. \nIt will amplify a message of action and protection. \nIt will inspire and engage more people to join the fight to resist domination by the fossil fuel industry. \nClimate change is upon us and we all need to do what we can to ‘build the best and block the bad.’ Fossil fuel infrastructure projects like the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley pipelines threaten people’s homes\, health\, safety\, and access to clean water. Ultimately\, these proposed projects harm all of us by deepening our region’s dependence on fossil fuels and accelerating climate chaos. \nThe Sculpture Action Vision for the Environment (S.A.V.E.) Sub-Committee\, Climate Action Alliance of the Valley wants to ‘block the bad’ with a strong symbol of resistance: “The Defenders” – a large\, moveable\, steel sculpture that will stand in defiance along these pipelines’ proposed paths. We have a sculptor team that has agreed to volunteer their time erecting this piece of protest art\, and landowners in Augusta\, Bath and Nelson Counties who will welcome the piece on their land\, close to the proposed pipeline route. (We are also exploring additional display sites). \nTo pull this off\, we need to raise $4\,000 to pay for the steel materials. The rest is in place to pull of this act of defiance. We need to act fast to make this statement\, as the pipeline plans continue to encroach on our lands and destroy Earth’s balances. \nJoin Climate Action Alliance of the Valley at Pale Fire Brewing Company on June 17th for The Defenders Preview Night. This event will kick off our fundraising campaign and lead into a month-long Kickstarter campaign that starts the following day. Please help us pull off this act of defiance by supporting us on June 17th and inviting your friends and family to join you. \nYou will have the chance to preview The Defenders model\, meet the sculptor team\, Mark Schwenk and Cheryl Langlais\, and have any questions you may have answered by the campaign organizers — all while enjoying Pale Fire’s great beer selection. We also hope to bring some local food vendors to offer delicious food for purchase on site! \nJoin the Climate Action Alliance of the Valley in making a strong statement of pipeline resistance in this act of solidarity with the many Defenders who are committed to stopping these projects. Checks and cash donations will be accepted to help us reach our $4\,000 fundraising goal. Keep an eye out for the launch of our Kickstarter campaign on June 18th!

SUMMARY:Festival of the [Monacan] River
DESCRIPTION:The Virginia River Healers have been invited to demonstrate at the Festival of the River in Richmond! Please join them on Saturday June 9\, 2018\, at 2:30pm. They will be using their presence to call attention to the threats of the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and Mountain Valley Pipeline. Show up and raise your voice for water justice! Show up and let Dominion and DEQ know how angry we all. DEQ and Dominion are sponsors of this 3 day festival for the river so let’s make a strong presence on Saturday. \nWhen: Saturday\, June 9th\, meet at 2:30pm\nWhere: Meet at the steps of the 7th street bridge on Browns Island. Richmond\, VA \nVirginia River Healers will have signs and banners ready to go and will be marching and demanding justice for our waters! This includes a call for Dominion Energy to stop work on the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and from horizontally drilling the so called James River for a fracked gas pipeline. At this very moment Dominion Energy and the Atlantic Coast Pipeline are preparing to horizontally drill the river\, a source of drinking water for over 3 million people. \nVirginia River Healers asks everyone in attendance to refer to the James River as the Monacan River and use this festival to also acknowledge the history of colonization and violence that has existed on this land long before the corporate violence of Dominion Energy and these pipelines. \nParking can be found at the corner of 5th and Tredegar St.
