While Northam has remained silent regarding the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and Mountain Valley Pipeline we will not! We plan to be heard and will make sure everyone in attendance is aware that our water\, our forests\, and the health of our communities will not be sacrificed for the corporate greed of Dominion Energy and EQT Corp’s fracked gas pipelines. \nJoin us starting at 11am to pass out information and literature to the coming crowd. At noon we will demonstrate outside of the Capitol grounds during the signing in ceremony. \nMore details coming.

SUMMARY:Conference Call: New Ways to Fight Old Energy
DESCRIPTION:Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN) has been defending Virginia for years against new pipelines and compressor stations and fracked-gas power plants. But now it’s time to play offense and take the fight directly to the dirty energy companies who are the real source of the war against clean water\, landowner justice\, and a livable climate. \nHere are the details: \nWhat: Activist Conference Call to Learn about the Virginia Alternative Energy and Coastal Protection Act\nWhen: Tuesday\, January 9\, 7:00 pm\nWhere: Your living room! Call-in details will be emailed to you after you RSVP.  RSVP and register here.\nWhy: Let’s stop future pipelines before they even start\, and protect our communities in Virginia from climate change \nOn the call\, we’ll tell you all about the proposed Virginia Alternative Energy and Coastal Protection Act (or VCPA for short). This bill would provide over a BILLION dollars in revenue for Virginia to invest in energy efficiency\, solar and wind power\, and new job training for former fossil fuel workers in Southwest Virginia\, along with the first large-scale investments in coastal Virginia to combat the staggering impacts of sea-level rise. \nLate last year\, Gov. Terry McAuliffe used his executive power to commit Virginia to creating a “cap” on carbon emissions from power plants with a carbon auction that will create over $1.5 BILLION dollars in “carbon revenue” by 2030. But without legislation like VCPA\, that money will flow to the polluting companies themselves\, like Dominion Energy and Appalachian Power. Unconscionably\, it will be a windfall for the very companies who are the problem. The AECPA\, instead\, mandates that all the money from the auction of pollution permits must be invested in alternative energy\, job training\, and adaptation measures in the face of rapid climate change. \nWe’ll also update you on the latest news about the Mountain Valley and Atlantic Coast Pipelines. Last month\, both pipelines were given conditional approval by the Virginia State Water Control Board. But those “conditions” could be decisive in our legal and regulatory battles to stop the pipelines. Learn more on the call – and how you can help. \n

SUMMARY:Cumberland County Planning Commission Discussion of ACP Construction Yard
DESCRIPTION:Members of the Cumberland County Planning Commission will hold a public hearing January 8\, 2017\, at 6:30 p.m. to discuss a temporary construction yard for materials to be used for the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP). According to a public notice from the commission the discussion will concern a conditional use permit (CUP) for a parcel of land on Salem Church road. The permit requests ‘allow(ing) borrowing and stockpiling of soil\, gravel and sand\, as well as utility operations\,’ according to the public notice. ‘The intended use is a temporary yard for storage of equipment and material for the Atlantic Coast Pipeline.’ According to the notice\, the request will cover 75 acres out of a 337-acre parcel. The property is zoned as Agricultural-2 and is not considered to be in a growth area in the county’s Comprehensive Plan\, according to the notice.  [Info from the Farmville Herald]

SUMMARY:Augusta BZA Consideration of ACP Construction Yard
DESCRIPTION:Come to the Augusta County BZA meeting Thursday Jan. 4\, 1:30 p.m. \nDespite nearly 3 ½ years of uniting our voices in opposition to Dominion’s disastrous pipeline plan\, the company continues to push forward with an unneeded project that will deeply and permanently decrease our community’s quality of life. On Thursday\, Jan. 4 at 1:30 p.m. at the Augusta County Board of Zoning Appeals (BZA) meeting in the Augusta County Government Center in Verona\, Dominion will again try to force another piece of their plan in place. And\, as usual\, they will be doing this without bothering to do their homework and study the impacts to the neighborhood. \nAgents for the Atlantic Coast Pipeline will be seeking permission to get a special use permit to construct a 34-acre construction materials yard near Churchville at the intersection of Scenic Highway (Rt. 42) and Union Church Road. Dominion’s plan is to clear and level the existing farmland in order to stockpile pipe\, fuel tanks\, sand bags\, silt fencing\, equipment parts\, etc. and to provide parking for construction equipment\, employee trucks\, and office trailers. If approved this would be the staging area for a significant area of ACP construction in western Virginia for 2 years! \nHere are just a few reasons why we should turn out as a community and ask that the BZA deny this application: \n\nThink about this lovely rural setting and imagine the amount of heavy truck and equipment traffic fanning out in every direction along these narrow country roads on a 24/7 basis.\nConsider how this will affect the area’s water quality with every rain and snow event creating sediment runoff and with the amount of leaking\, dripping fuel from vehicles and equipment.\nVisualize how the farmland will look with stacks of 40-foot long\, 42-inch diameter pipe and a row of portable toilets.\nAnd\, as usual\, Dominion has pulled a switcheroo – this is not even the location of the pipe yard that Dominion submitted to FERC for approval.\n\nThe above reasons as well as concern from VDOT that the location doesn’t meet site distance (and therefore they don’t recommend approval)\, the concern from the county that the project doesn’t meet county code for a rural setting because the applicant doesn’t live on site\, and that this is legally incompatible with the rural conservation zoning of the area are all sound and logical reasons why this application should not be approved. \nFurther\, there are so many questions that Dominion has not answered about the site. For starters there is no traffic count analysis to know exactly what the increased volume of heavy trucks and equipment that will travel these narrow roads. There is no materials list to know what hazardous products might be stored on site (such as blasting materials)\, and there is no stormwater management or erosion and sediment control analysis\, something that the State Water Control Board is also waiting for in regard to the ENTIRE route in Virginia. \nPlease come to Verona on Thursday and express your concern for this application. If you can’t attend (or in addition to attending)\, please communicate with the BZA board (click here for addresses) or email comments to the BZA secretary Sandy Bunch at sbunch@co.augusta.va.us and Community Development Director John Wilkinson at jwilkinson@co.augusta.va.us. Unlike Dominion\, the men and women on the BZA are from our community and care about your comments about our community. \nFor further information\, contact info@augustacountyalliance.org. \n

SUMMARY:Press Conference + Petition Delivery to VA Marine Resources Commission
DESCRIPTION:Join us in Newport News on Thursday\, December 21\, 2017\, for a press conference and petition delivery to the Virginia Marine Resources Commission (VMRC)\, to demand the agency hold public hearings to hear affected landowners’ and communities’ concerns on the proposed Mountain Valley and Atlantic Coast fracked gas pipeline projects. \nWe will deliver a petition requesting that VMRC plan public hearings on MVP and ACP that are located convenient to landowners and communities on the proposed pipeline routes — rather than at the VMRC’s HQ\, 2+ hours away in Newport News. \nAdd your name to the petition:\nhttps://boldalliance.webaction.org/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=24149 \nThe VMRC is responsible for issuing a state permit to both the MVP and ACP projects for specific water body crossings beneath the bed of streams and/or rivers with drainage areas greater than 5 square miles; these are considered to be State-owned subaqueous bottomlands of the Commonwealth (permit is a submerged Lands License under Virginia Administrative Code 4 VAC 20- 120-10 ET SEQ). \nThe VMRC is required to hold a public hearing as soon as there is a comment of protest to the projects (there has been). They typically hold public hearings in Newport News\, where their main offices are (2600 Washington Ave\, FL 3\, Newport News\, VA 23607). \nWe have a petition written to the head commissioner and the VMRC requesting that public hearings be held in proximity to the route of the proposed pipeline projects. (Sign the petition: https://boldalliance.webaction.org/p/dia/action4/common/public/?action_KEY=24149) \nWe\, the people\, have been sharing our concerns about the MVP and ACP projects for more than three years. We will continue to speak out and demand a just and fair process for the people of Virginia. We will be delivering our letter with this request on Thursday\, December 21\, 2017 and holding a brief Press Conference on site. \nPublic Comments can still be made to the VMRC; email them to Randy.Owen@mrc.virginia.gov\, specifying which project you are commenting on. \nThe link to VMRC permit tracking database is https://webapps.mrc.virginia.gov/public/habitat/ \nMVP Application #: 17-1609\nACP Application #: 15-1353\n(be sure to change the date range to 2015-2017)\nThe original application in under the “Application” tab.\nAny revisions\, protest letters\, letters of support\, etc. may be found under the “Additional Docs” tab.

SUMMARY:Candlelight Vigil Against the ACP & MVP Pipelines
DESCRIPTION:This past week\, the Virginia Water Control Board voted to approve the permit for the dangerous and unneeded Mountain Valley Pipeline for fracked gas. We strongly condemn this decision\, and the McAuliffe Administration’s support for the pipeline. \nNext week\, the Virginia Water Control Board will hold another round of hearings\, this time on the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. We have one last shot to make our voices heard and stand up against fracked-gas pipelines in Virginia. \nOur legal challenges could be the final chance to stop these monstrous pipelines that threaten our climate\, water\, and most vulnerable communities. But Governor McAuliffe has the authority to stop these pipelines. We need to make him see the light. \nJoin us Monday\, December 11th at 6:30 pm for a candlelight vigil at the Governor’s Mansion. Come after work\, come when you can\, invite your friends! Show the Governor the moral light and urge him to reject these pipelines once and for all. \nWe’ll gather on Governor’s Street behind the mansion and make our way over together. If you have trouble finding the meeting point or have any questions\, call Jamshid Bakhtiari at 757-386-8107.

DESCRIPTION:OneVirginia2021: Virginians for Fair Redistricting invites you to join us for a special screening of Gerryrigged:  Turning Democracy on Its Head. \nGerrymandering\, the process by which political district lines are drawn by the very politicians who stand to benefit by them\, affects the fabric of our democracy in profound ways.  Gerryrigged:  Turning Democracy on Its Head examines its impact in this hour-long documentary\, a partnership of WCVE (PBS) with OneVirginia2021: Virginians for Fair Redistricting.  Learn how non-partisan reform efforts in Virginia can change this dangerous trend and return political power to the voters. \nThe film\, with speaker Bill Oglesby\, will be shown on Tuesday November 28\, 2017\, at 7:00 pm at the Historic Wayne Theater\, 521 West Main St.\, Waynesboro VA.   The event is free. \nOneVirginia2021 is committed to education and advocacy\, with a multi-partisan approach that includes Republicans\, Democrats\, and Independents.  We believe that state and congressional districts belong to the citizens of our Commonwealth\, and not to any legislator\, political party\, or special interest. \n

The pollution problem follows. \nIts time: Ecosystems and species around the globe are collapsing under legal barriers erected by our own government and corporate lobbyists. \nIt’s here:  Tree Media presents We the People 2.0\, a film about CELDF’s work with communities to mobilize the grass roots Community Rights movement across the country. \nYou:  can create a Community Bill of Rights in your county.
