SUMMARY:Water is Life Parade & Rally
DESCRIPTION:Take the bus to Richmond for the Water Is Life Rally and Concert! Two buses are chartered to travel to Richmond on December 2nd for the Rally and Concert. There are 40 free bus tickets available for people to travel to Richmond. Bus stops in Harrisonburg\, Staunton and Charlottesville for riders. \nGo here for tickets:  https://www.eventbrite.com/e/water-is-life-rally-and-concert-central-virginia-buses-tickets-39961174950 \nOn Saturday\, December 2\, 2017 we will assemble at 1 pm at the Bell Tower on the Virginia Capital Grounds for the Circle of Protection Rally starting promptly at 1 pm. Together\, we will encircle the entire capital grounds to protect Virginia’s water as well as the courage and integrity of its newly elected leaders. Bring a blue ribbon\, scarf or fabric to create the waves of our circle. \nOur 60′ Water Spirit puppet and the ARTivists who will accompany and perform her will then walk together on the sidewalk a few short blocks up to The National for a concert\, keynote speaker\, participatory water is life ritual\, drinks\, and opportunities to prepare for a revived and powerful presence at the upcoming Virginia State Water Control Board hearings. \nWe invite all who are concerned about clean water to join together to tell the story of how the MVP and ACP pipelines\, coal ash dumping and weakened regulatory agencies are a real and certain threat to the drinking water of all the citizens of Virginia\, especially those who live in Richmond. \nOur rally and concert will be creative\, participatory\, affirming\, and peaceful and the messaging of those who join should be fine for children’s wide eyes. You are invited to participate. Start now gathering your group and creating your beautiful Water is life. Protect it. message for the rally and concert. Stay tuned for headliner speakers and performers. \nOur event will focus needed attention on the Virginia Water Control Board final hearings coming up in Richmond December 6\, 7\, 11 & 12 because these hearings represent the last political chance we have as Virginians to stop these fracked gas pipelines which are not about keeping the lights on or about jobs\, but are instead about a corruption in our government and a greedy land and profit grab by federal agencies and national corporations. \nYour voice is needed on Saturday\, December 2 and for each day of these hearings. The Department of Environmental Quality\, the Virginia Water Control Board\, the new Governor and the new legislature all need to be reminded who they are working for and it is not Dominion Power\, EQT or any of the other large corporations seeking to profit from these greed lines. \nOur coalition remains in formation\, but already includes:\nAll the Saints Theater\nAppalachian Voices\nARTivism Virginia\nAugusta County Alliance\nBlue Ridge Environmental Defense League\nBold Alliance\nChesapeake Climate Action Network\nCharlottesville Rising\nClimate Action Alliance of the Valley\nEarth Folk Collective\nHealing Water RVA\nInterfaith Power and Light\nJourney the James\nFriends of Augusta\nFriends of Buckingham\nFriends of Nelson\nPreserve Floyd\nPreserve Giles\nSierra Club Virginia Chapter\nVirginia River Healers\nWalking the Line: Into the Heart of Virginia\nWild Virginia \nand counting…. watch this page for more coalition members… \nyou in? \nHave questions or want to get involved? SUMMARY:Gerryrigged: Turning Democracy on Its Head
DESCRIPTION:OneVirginia2021: Virginians for Fair Redistricting invites you to join us for a special screening of Gerryrigged:  Turning Democracy on Its Head. \nGerrymandering\, the process by which political district lines are drawn by the very politicians who stand to benefit by them\, affects the fabric of our democracy in profound ways.  Gerryrigged:  Turning Democracy on Its Head examines its impact in this hour-long documentary\, a partnership of WCVE (PBS) with OneVirginia2021: Virginians for Fair Redistricting.  Learn how non-partisan reform efforts in Virginia can change this dangerous trend and return political power to the voters. \nThe film\, with speaker Bill Oglesby\, will be shown on Tuesday November 28\, 2017\, at 7:00 pm at the Historic Wayne Theater\, 521 West Main St.\, Waynesboro VA.   The event is free. \nOneVirginia2021 is committed to education and advocacy\, with a multi-partisan approach that includes Republicans\, Democrats\, and Independents.  We believe that state and congressional districts belong to the citizens of our Commonwealth\, and not to any legislator\, political party\, or special interest. \n

SUMMARY:Film: "We the People 2.0"
DESCRIPTION:Film: “We the People 2.0”\nTuesday\, November 21\, 6:30 pm\nNorthside Library Meeting Room\n705 W Rio Rd\nCharlottesville \nSponsored by Buckingham: We the People\, Cville Rising\, Friends of Buckingham \nTired of an exasperating system of environmental laws that authorize and protect inherently unsustainable activities like pipelines? We have come to understand\, like other communities\, that the root of our woes is that we have a democracy problem. The pollution problem follows. \nIts time: Ecosystems and species around the globe are collapsing under legal barriers erected by our own government and corporate lobbyists. \nIt’s here:  Tree Media presents We the People 2.0\, a film about CELDF’s work with communities to mobilize the grass roots Community Rights movement across the country. \nYou:  can create a Community Bill of Rights in your county.

SUMMARY:Candlelight Vigil: McAuliffe\, See the Light. Stop the Pipelines
DESCRIPTION:Now that the hard-fought election is over\, it’s time to get back to work and stop the Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley Pipelines once and for all. \nWe need to show Governor McAuliffe — and recently elected Ralph Northam — that we’re not going to back down. We need to make them see the light. \nThe events over the next couple of weeks could be our final chance to stop these monstrous pipelines that threaten our climate\, water\, and most vulnerable communities. \nJoin us Tuesday\, November 14 at 5:00 pm for a candlelight vigil at the Governor’s Mansion. Show the Governor the moral light and urge him to reject these pipelines once and for all. \nWe’ll gather on Governor’s Street behind the mansion and make our way over together. If you have trouble finding the meeting point or have any questions\, call Jamshid Bakhtiari at 757-386-8107.

SUMMARY:People's Tribunal on Human Rights and Environmental Justice
DESCRIPTION:In the painful aftermath of the recent racist violence in Charlottesville\, we seek to draw a straight line between these white supremacist attacks and the slow violence of unequally borne environmental devastation. The Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) and the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP) routes target rural\, poor\, African American\, Native American\, and Appalachian communities from West Virginia\, Virginia\, and North Carolina to bear the disproportionate burden of their toxic polluting fracked gas infrastructure. \nOn October 28\, 2017 in Charlottesville’s City Space\, we will hold a people’s tribunal to investigate and document evidence of environmental injustice and racism by the ACP and MVP using a human rights query format. Its bases are in the UN Convention on Racism and Racial Discrimination (CERD) and the UN Permanent Peoples’ Tribunal on the Human Rights Impacts of Fracking. UN people’s tribunals create public space to present evidence for and information about issues critical to a just and civil society\, especially those that have not been recognized as violations of human rights. \nTribunal testimonies will present evidence of first person impacts of both pipelines on environmental justice communities. In Union Hill\, Buckingham\, VA — an 85% African American\, historic Freedmen community — the ACP purchased former Variety Shade plantation lands from white descendants to site their only Virginia mega-compressor station within 150 ft. of 99 Union Hill households. For the MVP and ACP\, the majority of landowners targeted to give up their property rights are rural\, impoverished Appalachians. \nOther evidence-based testimonies we will document and live-stream will be by historians\, environmental scientists on fracked gas infrastructure hazards to ecosystems\, medical experts on the health impacts of compressor stations and pipelines\, economists on the cost benefits of racism and inequality and also the lack of need to build any more fracked gas transmission pipelines in Virginia.\nTo build the ACP alone will cost Dominion’s ratepayers $5 billion. Together ACP and MVP will present Virginians with an incalculable bill for climate change costs. \nThese testimonies will be presided over by experts in these fields as “judges” who will summarize findings and propose recommendations to policy makers.\nThese are imminent threats. Within the month\, ACP and MVP hope FERC will issue certificates of use to start construction. In November\, Virginians elect a new governor and legislators. The time is now to provide Virginia residents with the facts about who is being forced by the developers to pay with their health\, clean air\, water\, and soil for the economic benefit of corporate stockholders and not the common good. \nWays you can help: as co-sponsors\, judges\, testifiers\, fundraisers\, donors and event volunteers in this effort to bring local\, state\, and national awareness to the environmental injustices within imminent fracked gas infrastructure threats to our climate\, health\, and sustainable futures. \nFor more information\, including the list of sponsoring organizations\, see the People’s Tribunal flyer here. \nThe Tribunal Registration Form is here. \nThe Tribunal Testimony Sign-Up Form is here. \nCo-chairs:\nLakshmi Fjord: lakshmi.fjord@gmail.com\nKirk Bowers: kirk.bowers@sierraclub.org \nCo-sponsors:\nFriends of Buckingham\, Virginia Sierra Club\, Allegheny Blue Ridge Alliance (ABRA)\, Concern for the New Generation – BREDL\, Virginia Student Environmental Coalition\, Appalachian Voices\, Bold Alliance\, Protect Our Water Heritage Rights (POWHR)\, Yogaville Environmental Solutions\, Journey the James\, Cville Rising\, 350 Central Virginia\, Preserve Montgomery\, Preserve Franklin\, Preserve Giles\, Oil Change International\, Rachel Carson Council\, Virginia Organizing\, Interfaith Power and Light\, Cville Indivisible\, ARTivism Virginia\, Friends of Nelson.

SUMMARY:Art in Your Arsenal
DESCRIPTION:Join Wild Virginia and eco-Artist Amelia L. Williams on Saturday October 21\, 2017\, 9:30-11:30 a.m.\, to see the front lines of the #NoACP struggle and learn about/contribute to a 3-piece art installation built as a protest tactic and to publicize the landscapes threatened by the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline. \nEco-artist Amelia L. Williams will take you on a walking tour of her two pieces of soundscape art and you will get a glimpse of the landowner’s “orange flag” signal-to-noise piece that is in progress. The triad of pieces are in different terrains and the walk will be designed to accommodate walkers of varying abilities. We will begin with the easy walking path and move on to a downhill trek through meadow and then a quick bushwhack to a trail in the woods. \nClick here to register! \nYou may contribute — if you wish — to the “instrument table” piece\, so bring something that can be inserted into a rattle or that can be clapped or banged to make a sound. Here are some ideas: kernels of Ponca corn\, metal objects that are locally made\, or represent water protection\, wooden implements to use for striking together\, glass bottles or jars with labels removed to fill with water (preferably bring a cork – artist will also have some corks available)\, old metal pieces from wind chimes\, etc. – be creative.

SUMMARY:Energize Appalachia
DESCRIPTION:Join Appalachian Voices on Tuesday\, October 17\, 2017\, at 7:00 p.m. for Energize Appalachia\, an evening about energy transition in Appalachia and beyond. \nThe event will feature: award-winning journalist\, author and long-time Appalachian Voices board member Clara Bingham\, who will screen her film The Last Mountain\, which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival; a short film by the Light House students; and a panel discussion with Clara\, Kate Boyle of Appalachian Voices\, and Logan Landry from Sigora Solar. This event is free and open to the public. \nAbout Energize Appalachia \nFor more than a century\, Appalachian coal built our infrastructure\, our universities\, and powered our technological advancement. But it came at an enormous cost for mountain communities. Coal companies have blown up more than 500 of the oldest\, most biologically rich mountains in the world and buried over 2\,000 miles of headwater streams. Appalachian communities located near mountaintop removal mines have double the cancer rates of nearby counties with no mining activity. \nNow\, with the Trump administration’s commitment to revive the coal industry\, West Virginia’s Coal River Mountain—known as the Last Mountain—is facing renewed threats from mountaintop removal mining. \nAppalachian Voices is working to Energize Appalachia by putting solar power on schools\, low-income housing communities\, hospitals\, and old mountaintop removal mine sites in the heart of Southwest Virginia’s coal country. By creating a clean energy economy in the coalfields\, we can build more vibrant\, healthy communities for future generations. \nTO RSVP: fill out our form online\, join our Facebook event\, or contact Susan Kruse susan@appvoices.org

SUMMARY:Virginia Outdoors Foundation Board Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) has scheduled a special meeting of its Board of Directors for October 16\, 2017\, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Virginia State Corporation Commission\, 1300 East Main\, Richmond. The meeting is for VOF to “complete its review of conversion applications related to the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and Mountain Valley Pipeline.” \nIn 2016 the ACP developers told VOF that in order for their route to avoid Forest Service land\, it would need to cross 10 easements in Highland\, Bath\, Augusta and Nelson counties. And the MVP\, although it does not want to route its proposed pipeline across the property itself\, does want a permanent access road on a VOF conservation easement in Roanoke County. VOF has told both ACP and MVP that such incursions are incompatible with the conservation values of the easements. There is a process in state law known as “conversion” of open space\, whereby acreage under easement is swapped for other acreage elsewhere which is then put under conservation easement. Both ACP and MVP submitted conversion proposals\, and at its February 2017 meeting\, after hearing presentations from the developers\, VOF staff\, and affected landowners\, and receiving comments from hundreds of citizens. VOF’s board of trustees voted to defer a decision on applications presented by Dominion to convert open space on 10 easements that lie in the path of the proposed ACP. \nThe special meeting will be open to the public and VOF will accept written comments on the conversion applications through October 16\, 2017. To submit written comments you may use the VOF online form\, you may email comments to comments@vofonline.org\, or you may mail them to the VOF Warrenton office at 39 Garrett St.\, Suite 200\, Warrenton\, VA 20186. \nThe details of the meeting are still being finalized and are subject to change through October 13\, 2017. Check the VOF meeting page for details\, changes\, and further information.

SUMMARY:Climate Action in the Commonwealth
DESCRIPTION:Climate Action in the Commonwealth: An Introduction to Virginia’s Carbon Rule \nCharlottesville Location: Jefferson-Madison Regional Library\, Central Branch. \nJoin Virginia Conservation Network — together with 350 Central Virginia\, Appalachian Voices\, Sierra Club Virginia Chapter\, and Chesapeake Climate Action Network — for an engaging and educational evening focused on how we can work together to guarentee climate action in Virginia. Attendees will learn more about Governor McAuliffe’s Executive Directive 11 (see below for more information on what this is)\, how these regulations will affect Virginia\, and how we can help make this a success together. \nBackground on Executive Directive 11:\nIn May 2017\, Governor McAuliffe issued Executive Directive 11 — also known as the Clean Energy Virginia initiative — which directed the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to draft proposed regulations to reduce carbon pollution from stationary sources. By setting this limit\, Governor McAuliffe made Virginia the first southern state to directly address climate change. Over the course of 2017\, DEQ has been drafting the proposed regulations and will present them to the State Air Pollution Control Board for review and approval. This vote will happen in mid-November. \nExecutive Directive 11 was the result of the growing momentum of public outcry for government action on climate. This is one of the many important steps needed to tackle climate change and protect our most vulnerable communities from its devastating effects. Governor McAuliffe’s announcement started an important process to enact a carbon reduction standard for Virginia. \nThough Executive Directive 11 is moving forward\, our work is not done yet. It is critical that Virginians understand and engage in this regulatory process. These community meetings provide Virginians with the opportunity to learn how to do exactly that.
