SUMMARY:Energize Appalachia
DESCRIPTION:Join Appalachian Voices on Tuesday\, October 17\, 2017\, at 7:00 p.m. for Energize Appalachia\, an evening about energy transition in Appalachia and beyond. \nThe event will feature: award-winning journalist\, author and long-time Appalachian Voices board member Clara Bingham\, who will screen her film The Last Mountain\, which premiered at the 2011 Sundance Film Festival; a short film by the Light House students; and a panel discussion with Clara\, Kate Boyle of Appalachian Voices\, and Logan Landry from Sigora Solar. This event is free and open to the public. \nAbout Energize Appalachia \nFor more than a century\, Appalachian coal built our infrastructure\, our universities\, and powered our technological advancement. But it came at an enormous cost for mountain communities. Coal companies have blown up more than 500 of the oldest\, most biologically rich mountains in the world and buried over 2\,000 miles of headwater streams. Appalachian communities located near mountaintop removal mines have double the cancer rates of nearby counties with no mining activity. \nNow\, with the Trump administration’s commitment to revive the coal industry\, West Virginia’s Coal River Mountain—known as the Last Mountain—is facing renewed threats from mountaintop removal mining. \nAppalachian Voices is working to Energize Appalachia by putting solar power on schools\, low-income housing communities\, hospitals\, and old mountaintop removal mine sites in the heart of Southwest Virginia’s coal country. By creating a clean energy economy in the coalfields\, we can build more vibrant\, healthy communities for future generations. \nTO RSVP: fill out our form online\, join our Facebook event\, or contact Susan Kruse susan@appvoices.org

SUMMARY:Virginia Outdoors Foundation Board Meeting
DESCRIPTION:The Virginia Outdoors Foundation (VOF) has scheduled a special meeting of its Board of Directors for October 16\, 2017\, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the Virginia State Corporation Commission\, 1300 East Main\, Richmond. The meeting is for VOF to “complete its review of conversion applications related to the Atlantic Coast Pipeline and Mountain Valley Pipeline.” \nIn 2016 the ACP developers told VOF that in order for their route to avoid Forest Service land\, it would need to cross 10 easements in Highland\, Bath\, Augusta and Nelson counties. And the MVP\, although it does not want to route its proposed pipeline across the property itself\, does want a permanent access road on a VOF conservation easement in Roanoke County. VOF has told both ACP and MVP that such incursions are incompatible with the conservation values of the easements. There is a process in state law known as “conversion” of open space\, whereby acreage under easement is swapped for other acreage elsewhere which is then put under conservation easement. Both ACP and MVP submitted conversion proposals\, and at its February 2017 meeting\, after hearing presentations from the developers\, VOF staff\, and affected landowners\, and receiving comments from hundreds of citizens. VOF’s board of trustees voted to defer a decision on applications presented by Dominion to convert open space on 10 easements that lie in the path of the proposed ACP. \nThe special meeting will be open to the public and VOF will accept written comments on the conversion applications through October 16\, 2017. To submit written comments you may use the VOF online form\, you may email comments to comments@vofonline.org\, or you may mail them to the VOF Warrenton office at 39 Garrett St.\, Suite 200\, Warrenton\, VA 20186. \nThe details of the meeting are still being finalized and are subject to change through October 13\, 2017. Check the VOF meeting page for details\, changes\, and further information.

SUMMARY:Climate Action in the Commonwealth
DESCRIPTION:Climate Action in the Commonwealth: An Introduction to Virginia’s Carbon Rule \nCharlottesville Location: Jefferson-Madison Regional Library\, Central Branch. \nJoin Virginia Conservation Network — together with 350 Central Virginia\, Appalachian Voices\, Sierra Club Virginia Chapter\, and Chesapeake Climate Action Network — for an engaging and educational evening focused on how we can work together to guarentee climate action in Virginia. Attendees will learn more about Governor McAuliffe’s Executive Directive 11 (see below for more information on what this is)\, how these regulations will affect Virginia\, and how we can help make this a success together. \nBackground on Executive Directive 11:\nIn May 2017\, Governor McAuliffe issued Executive Directive 11 — also known as the Clean Energy Virginia initiative — which directed the Virginia Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) to draft proposed regulations to reduce carbon pollution from stationary sources. By setting this limit\, Governor McAuliffe made Virginia the first southern state to directly address climate change. Over the course of 2017\, DEQ has been drafting the proposed regulations and will present them to the State Air Pollution Control Board for review and approval. This vote will happen in mid-November. \nExecutive Directive 11 was the result of the growing momentum of public outcry for government action on climate. This is one of the many important steps needed to tackle climate change and protect our most vulnerable communities from its devastating effects. Governor McAuliffe’s announcement started an important process to enact a carbon reduction standard for Virginia. \nThough Executive Directive 11 is moving forward\, our work is not done yet. It is critical that Virginians understand and engage in this regulatory process. These community meetings provide Virginians with the opportunity to learn how to do exactly that.

SUMMARY:Water Quality Monitor Training
DESCRIPTION:Applications Now Open\nBecome a Water Quality Monitor!\n \nMonitoring water quality is one of the most important and meaningful ways to combat pipelines in Virginia. \nProtect your national forests from pipelines and fracking by becoming a citizen science water quality monitor \nWild Virginia is hosting a one-day training on September 16 for volunteers to learn how to properly conduct water quality monitoring on streams in Virginia. Trout Unlimited will teach you how to conduct chemical monitoring on water samples\, measure stream flow\, test water temperatures and turbidity and conduct visual assessments. \nWe need monitoring help in Highland and Bath counties in the Upper Back Creek and Upper Jackson River as well as the Cowpasture River watershed. These are priority watersheds that could be negatively impacted by pipelines. \nBy becoming a water quality monitor\, you can help combat pipelines and protect our forests and drinking water. \nNo prior experience necessary\, but a serious commitment to ongoing monitoring once per month is expected. \nWild Virginia has teamed up with WV Rivers Coalition and Trout Unlimited to implement this Water Quality Monitoring Project. We work together to train and equip volunteers to monitor cold water streams in areas with the potential to experience impacts from shale gas development.

SUMMARY:People's Pipeline Protest - Lunchtime Rally and Press Conference
DESCRIPTION:Join the People’s Pipeline Protest\, September 13-14\, 2017\, organized by Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN). \nTwo days of spirited\, creative protests at seven key Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) offices statewide to stop two fracked-gas pipelines. Help CCAN say NO at locations in Virginia Beach\, Roanoke\, Harrisonburg\, Richmond\, Abingdon\, Glen Allen\, or Woodbridge. \nThursday\, September 14th –Lunchtime rally and press conference at noon at all DEQ offices.  In a culminating appeal\, local citizens will attend lunchtime rallies on the public sidewalks outside the DEQ offices in Virginia Beach\, Roanoke\, Harrisonburg\, Richmond\, Abingdon\, Glen Allen\, or Woodbridge. Our top message: “Governor\, we’ve been asking you for three years to do the right thing and reject these pipelines. Now we ask you to deeply reflect on your responsibility to protect human life and the environment\, BEFORE deciding to harm our state and your legacy forever.” We expect scores of participants at each protest with key local leaders speaking to the issues. We’ll have banners and signs and invite local media. We’ll have a giant cardboard clock showing that time is running out. \nThis will likely be your best and perhaps last chance to exercise your freedom of speech in this most powerful way BEFORE any final state decisions are made. \nMore information\, including background information on why we need to do this (do you know about the PH3 trio?). \nLocations of the seven DEQ offices around Virginia.

SUMMARY:Journey the James River Flotilla
DESCRIPTION:Journey the James River Flotilla\n Protect our Watershed\n September 4-7th 2017 \nPaddle the James River in kayaks and canoes from Yogaville in Buckingham County to Richmond to bring attention to the destructive impact the two proposed natural gas pipelines would have on our precious water resources. \nDrawing energy from Those who recently “Walked the Line” through the heart of Virginia and experienced the mountains and valleys that would be irreparably damaged by the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP) and Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP)\, we continue where they left off and take to the water for a trip that will be both educational and a non-violent political demonstration. \nParticipants will meet Sunday night\, September 3rd\, at Yogaville and begin our journey on the water early Monday morning\, camping each night along the river. A support vehicle will transport camping gear to the sites each day and meals will be prepared by Seeds of Peace mobile kitchen. \nFurther information: \nFacebook:\nhttps://www.facebook.com/events/1873222376332791/ \nWEBSITE:\nhttps://journeythejames.squarespace.com/
