SUMMARY:Pipeline Summit
DESCRIPTION:The Allegheny-Blue Ridge Alliance (ABRA) and the POWHR Coalition will co-host a Pipeline Summit on Saturday\, November 12\, 2016\, in Natural Bridge\, VA. The 10 am to 4 pm meeting is designed to aid participants working to defeat the pipelines proposed across the Allegheny-Blue Ridge region with improved information\, messages and skills to carry on their efforts in 2017. \nThere is a $10 charge for lunch and beverages (a wide choice of sandwiches and salads will be available) to be paid upon your arrival. \nThe need for reforming property rights laws\, particularly eminent domain\, will be a major subject addressed. Participating in this important discussion will be: \n\nLarry Shapiro\, Associate Director for Program Development\, Rockefeller Family Fund\, New York City. He is also President of the Board of the Institute for Energy Economics and Financial Analysis (IEFFA)\, the organization that released a study in April on the risks of pipeline expansions in the Appalachian region. Mr. Shapiro convened a national conference in June on “Pipelines and Eminent Domain.” He will be discussing a new initiative that seeks to reform the ability of pipeline companies to utilize eminent domain laws.\nRichard Averitt\, CEO at Digital ReLab and a Nelson County\, VA resident. Mr. Averitt has been significantly impacted by the proposed ACP. A 100-acre property he and his father\, Dick Averitt\, purchased in the Rockfish Valley portion of Nelson County\, VA to build a resort is in the path of the ACP\, thus preventing the resort development from proceeding. The resort would create 50 full-time and 50-75 part-time jobs\, significantly more permanent employment than the ACP would create in the entire Commonwealth of Virginia.\nKate Wofford\, Executive Director\, Shenandoah Valley Network\, an organization whose mission is to maintain healthy and productive rural landscapes and communities\, to protect and restore natural resources\, and to strengthen and sustain the region’s agricultural economy. Ms. Wofford will discuss the environmental easement issue in Virginia and also serve as the panel’s moderator.\n\nClick Here to Register

SUMMARY:Two Ongoing Exhibits: Masks\, Troubled Waters
DESCRIPTION:Masks\n Where: Rockfish Valley Community Center Auditorium\n When: On display through October 31\, 2016 \nThe exhibit displays masks created to represent local animals in the “Hands Across Our Land” event of August 18\, 2016\, protesting the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline. If built\, this pipeline would destroy many acres of habitat\, negatively impacting animals as well as humans. The mask-makers believe we should speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. The masks are to remind us of our non-human neighbors. They were used again on September 13\, 2016\, at the Lovingston Courthouse\, in an event that was part of a national action demonstrating solidarity with those resisting the Dakota Access Pipeline. We sympathize with and support the efforts of the Standing Rock Sioux to protect their water\, land\, and cultural and historical sites. \nTroubled Water: Voices from Bath\n Where: IX Art Park\, 963 2nd St SE\, Charlottesville\, VA 22902\n When: Photo Exhibit October 18-30\, 2016\, plus Video Premier Event Friday\, October 28\, 7:00-9:00 pm \nTroubled Water: Voices from Bath uses fine photography\, audio interviews and film to explore the personal and environmental issues of Dominion’s proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline in Bath County\, VA. Seeking to illuminate how the proposed Atlantic Coast natural gas pipeline affects those living closest to it\, professional photographer Lee Brauer\, a recent Bath County resident\, partnered with Barbara Adams\, a member of Interfaith Climate Justice in Richmond\, VA\, and Julian McBain and Sam Wright\, student environmental activists at Virginia Commonwealth University\, to create Troubled Water: Voices from Bath.

Bath County residents overwhelmingly are united against the ACP and have joined others in the state sharing the same perspective. Troubled Water: Voices from Bath uses a multi-media approach – exquisite photos\, audio stories and a moving documentary-style video – to share stories of Bath residents\, their history and relationship with the land and dreams for it. This creative venture highlights those with a deep understanding of the county’s unique environment – karst mountain topography and hydrology; scenic mountain roads\, bridges and forests threatened by the need to transport large\, heavy equipment\, and unparalleled pristine springs\, streams and rivers – of the Bath County region and the heartland of Virginia. \nContact: Barbara Adams ~ barb5100@comcast.net ~  804-484-2773

SUMMARY:Buckingham Planning Commission Meeting - Compressor Station
DESCRIPTION:Please keep showing up! The long journey continues Monday October 24\, 2016. 6 pm\, with discussion of the compressor station at the Buckingham County Planning Commission’s regular monthly meeting\, Buckingham County Administration Building\, 13380 West James Anderson Hwy\, Buckingham. At the meeting\, Dominion will have yet another turn at responding to citizen comments. Friends of Buckingham is asking to be able to respond to Dominion. One way to do that is to send your written comments to the county zoning/planning administrator\, Rebecca Cobb\, and ask that they be posted on the county’s website in the compressor station section. Click here for the public comment submissions to the 10/17 meeting. \nTo bolster spirits\, PAUSE will again lead us in a Circle of Prayer and Song at 5:30\, before the meeting. \nAppalachian Voices is conducting interviews in preparation for an article on the compressor station in their December/January issue\, and will be set up at 4:30 pm Monday at the county administration building to conduct interviews with folks before the 6 pm meeting.

SUMMARY:Citizens' Picket for Climate and Energy Justice
DESCRIPTION:October 3-5\, 2016: join the CCAN-sponsored citizens’ picket line outside Governor McAuliffe’s downtown Richmond offices. Why three days? Because we have three major battles on our hands in Virginia where we need our Governor to stand with people\, not polluters: pipelines\, coal ash dumping\, and coastal flooding. Each day will feature the voices of Virginians on the front lines of these fights\, demanding that our Governor stand up to Dominion and other fossil fuel polluters. \nCome for one\, two\, or all three days for a lunchtime parade of colorful signs\, chanting\, and truth. We’ll ask Gov. McAuliffe to: 1) Reject state permits for fracked-gas pipelines; 2) Require Dominion and other utilities to permanently protect our waterways from toxic coal ash; 3) Commit to serious clean energy and adaptation solutions to keep our coastal communities above water. \nWHEN: Monday\, Oct. 3rd (pipeline focus)\, Tuesday\, Oct. 4 (coal ash focus)\, and Wednesday\, Oct. 5th (coast and climate focus). Meet at 11:30 a.m. for opening remarks; picket from noon – 1 p.m.\nWHERE: Meet at the Bell Tower on the Capitol Grounds (by the corner of N 9th St. & Bank St.). We’ll picket on the sidewalk outside the Governor’s offices at 1111 E Broad St\, Richmond\, VA.
