SUMMARY:Friends of Nelson Public Meeting
DESCRIPTION:Sunday October 20\, 2019 – The Nelson Center\, gather at 5:30\, meeting begins at 6:00.  Ted Glick\, from Beyond Extreme Energy (BXE)\, will be our featured speaker\, and will show a short film followed by discussion.  We’ll also have announcements and updates.  This is a kid-friendly event\, and there will be an art station run by BXE’s Maple Osterbrink. \nJoin activists from Beyond Extreme Energy (BXE) on their FERC Into FREC roadshow! BXE is traveling from the shalefields of Pennsylvania down through the path of the MVP and ACP pipelines in West Virginia and Virginia. BXE members will screen their short film “FERC Doesn’t Work” and hold a community discussion on the fight to turn the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) into the Federal Renewable Energy Commission (FREC). FERC is the federal agency responsible for the regulation of all fossil fuel infrastructure and pipelines that cross state lines. As such FERC is a lynchpin in the nationwide movement against fossil fuels and for climate justice! \nTed Glick has been a progressive activist\, organizer and writer since 1968. He has prioritized the climate crisis issue since 2004 and was one of the founders of Beyond Extreme Energy in 2014. Following retirement after nine years as the National Campaign Coordinator for the Chesapeake Climate Action Network\, he has worked since as a volunteer with BXE and several local and state organizations in New Jersey fighting climate disruption and the expansion of new fossil fuel infrastructure. Since 2000 he has written a nationally-distributed Future Hope column of political\, social and cultural commentary. \nMaple Osterbrink has volunteered for peace\, justice and earth conservation since the 1960’s. She “took the earth-conservation pledge as a young girl scout and has held to it.” She retired from several “almost-careers” to North Carolina and is helping out many organizations including BXE\, APPPL\, Workers’ Assembly and the Raging Grannies. She worked to preserve wetlands in New Hampshire in the mid-90’s as a town conservation commissioner. She is “sick of the corruption\, theft and poisoning of democracy\, peace\, water\, food and sustainability.” As an artist she will have mini-projects to do with children\, or adults\, during events.

SUMMARY:Charlottesville Youth Climate Strike
DESCRIPTION:The strike will be from noon to 1pm at the Free Speech Wall downtown on Friday\, September 20\, 2019. \nYouth activists will strike to demand transformative action to address the global climate crisis and locally\, to stop the harmful Atlantic Coast and Mountain Valley Pipelines and the compressor station in the historic African American community\, Union Hill. Rally speakers include Swami Dayananda of the Yogaville Ashram in Buckingham County and a representative from the Virginia Student Environmental Coalition at UVA; additional speakers will be announced soon. \nAfter a short rally\, Charlottesville youth will hold a die-in to draw attention to the devastating effect climate change is already having on vulnerable populations and the uncertain future of all youth. \nFollowing the die-in\, Charlottesville youth will march on the Downtown Mall. Virginia Student Environmental Coalition at UVA will be rallying on grounds in the morning and marching from UVA to join the youth rally. \nEveryone is welcome! Attendees are asked to bring a sign/or tombstone. If possible\, adults should wear black. \nBuilding on a historic surge of student protests and strikes for climate action\, the September 20 strike comes ahead of the United Nations Summit on Climate Change three days later\, when world leaders will convene in New York with the goal of deepening climate ambition. In over 150 countries\, people are already pledging to organize events on September 20 and during the Week of Action that follows. \nCharlottesville youth\, along with partner organizations Virginia Student Environmental Coalition at UVA\, Virginia Interfaith Power & Light\, the Green Grannies\, several other members of the Cville100 climate coalition\, and Charlottesville Democratic Socialists of America\, are leading the strike to demand stark climate action be taken by local\, national\, and global politicians. \n“As Union Hill faces the compressor station and pipeline\, we stand with them in protecting our region from harmful and unnecessary fossil fuel infrastructure\, and highlight the burden upon future generations which will be symbolized by a die-in during the rally\,” said strike organizer Gudrun Campbell. “Youth around the world have been striking for months and now we call on you\, the adults\, to join us.”

SUMMARY:Our Air\, Our Health\, Our Common Future: The Fight to Save Union Hill
DESCRIPTION:Our Air\, Our Health\, Our Common Future: The Fight to Save Union Hill \nSaturday\, September 7\, 2019 at 1 PM – 4 PM\nUnion Hill\, Virginia \nHosted by Appalachian Voices\, Sierra Club Virginia Chapter\, Virginia Interfaith Power and Light\, POWHR\, Water Is Life. Protect It. \nJoin friends\, neighbors and Virginians leading the fight to protect our communities against corporate polluters for a Town Hall to address this important question: What kind of Commonwealth are we? \nRefreshments will be served immediately following the event program. Please register on our Eventbrite web page (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/our-air-our-health-our-common-future-the-fight-to-save-union-hill-tickets-69378548105) so you have all the details and directions to the event (and to give us an accurate head count for food!). \nThe Town Hall will take place on the ancestral land of Taylor Harper\, a former slave who bought a portion of the plantation land he once toiled in Union Hill. This community has been targeted for a massive\, dangerous fracked-gas compressor station that would be part of the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline – a highly controversial\, expensive and unneeded project. \nYou’ll hear from several Harper descendants as well as other Union Hill landowners who likewise trace their ancestry to the courageous women and men who founded this historic community\, and other area residents. The Town Hall will also feature speakers from the Southern Environmental Law Center and Chesapeake Bay Foundation who are representing community members in efforts to stop the compressor station. \nThe fight for Union Hill is part of a broader struggle for environmental justice in Virginia. It also includes the Atlantic Coast Pipeline\, the Mountain Valley Pipeline\, the Chickahominy power plant\, the mega dump (called “Green Ridge”) in Cumberland County and other projects that threaten vulnerable communities. Together\, communities across the commonwealth are calling on our elected leaders to take meaningful action to develop sound environmental policies that leave no community behind.

SUMMARY:DEQ Hearing on Proposed Chickahominy Gas Power Station
DESCRIPTION:Friday June 21\, 2019\, State Air Pollution Control Board Meeting on proposed permit for the Chickahominy fracked gas power plant. 10 am. Virginia Crossing Hotel and Conference Center\, 1000 Virginia Center Parkway\, Glen Allen\, 23059 (Note the VA DEQ’s constant practice of having these key permit meetings outside the affected communities and in private\, not public\, spaces.)  For more info and graphic to share go to Virginia River Healers here: https://www.facebook.com/virginiariverhealers/posts/2582331515134764 \nThe Virginia DEQ is trying to approve a massive fracked gas power plant in an environmental justice community in Charles City County\, VA. The addition of this power station would make the area the 5th largest gas emissions area in the United States! Take a look at the annual emissions and health impacts table we put together. No community needs these toxins in their air\, especially at a time when solutions to climate change catastrophe are urgently needed. We need you all to help educate about the proposed Chickahominy Gas Power Station and see if you can show up to the hearing on Friday\, June 21st at 10am.

SUMMARY:Energy Democracy: A New Way Forward
DESCRIPTION:Join us Tuesday June 18\, 2019\, 6:30-8:00 pm\, at Trinity Episcopal Church\, 1118 Preston Ave.\, Charlottesville 22903\, Charlottesville 22903\, for a lively presentation on Virginia’s progress towards a more sustainable\, affordable and equitable energy system — and how you can get involved. \nYou’ll learn a bit about why the current system is broken due to monopoly control by Dominion Energy and others\, and why that is driving up your energy bills\, driving the climate crisis\, and enabling unneeded and harmful projects like the Atlantic Coast Pipeline. \nA truly just energy system would allow the public to participate in decisions that impact them and their communities:\nHow much electricity we use and when we use it\,\nHow much we pay for it\,\nWhere our electricity comes from\, and\nWhere energy infrastructure is sited \nWe’ll have plenty of time for Q&A and group discussion\, and opportunities for you to become part of the movement toward Energy Democracy!

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 8: Union Hill Social and Fish Fry to kick off Bridging the Gap solar installation and environmental health training: 3-7 pm\, 1296 Union Hill Road. RSVP required to 804-248-6756. \nBridging the Gap In Virginia has received a grant from Mertz Gilmore Foundation to sponsor a solar installation and environmental health training program in the Union Hill area of Buckingham County\, for the benefit of the African-American community. As you know\, Union Hill struggles economically and many leave in search of work. \nOur vision is to provide good jobs for the residents of Union Hill while starting a green workforce development program that mentors formerly incarcerated individuals and at-risk youth in the areas of solar installation\, energy audits and conservation (i.e.\, weatherization\, efficiency) and in-door environmental health (i.e.\, lead testing and encapsulation\, mold remediation\, and air quality monitoring). \nWe are beginning this week long training with a community event on Saturday June 8th from 3-7pm with a community social and fish fry at 1296 Union Hill Rd.  Please join us in this celebration for and by our community. SUMMARY:Herring\, Stand with Appalachia: No Mountain Valley Pipeline
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 18\, 2019 at 1 PM – 3 PM \nLeesburg\, Virginia \nRally with us in Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring’s hometown to encourage him to rise above the incompetence\, corruption\, and climate consequences associated with fracked gas pipelines. Delegates Chris Hurst and Sam Rasoul will lead Southwest Virginians to NoVa to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with allies from across the Commonwealth and demand a stop work order for the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP). \nVirginians oppose the MVP\, the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP)\, and the Southside Connector because they are unnecessary\, unjust\, and destructive of our water\, ecosystems\, and climate. Virginians demand real action on climate change\, including major reductions in fossil fuel production and use. Virginians want a democracy that is not captured by corporate interests and a regulatory process that is honest\, transparent\, responsive to Virginians\, and protective of the most vulnerable among us. \nWe request that Mark Herring\n1) initiate a STOP WORK order for Mountain Valley Pipeline\,\n2) pursue his lawsuit against MVP to its fullest and refuse to settle the case\,\n3) and affirm the state’s authority to revoke a certification it granted. \nWe invite Herring to be a leader. Should he accept\, we invite him to be the star of the show on May 18. \nThis No Pipelines Rally for the Climate is co-sponsored by POWHR (Protect Our Water\, Heritage\, Rights)\, Indivisible NoVA West\, 350 Loudoun\, Great Falls Sierra Club\, Northern Virginia chapter of the Climate Reality Project\, Indivisible Northern Virginia\, Fauquier Indivisible\, Food and Water Watch\, Water is Life.
