SUMMARY:Two Ongoing Exhibits: Masks\, Troubled Waters
DESCRIPTION:Masks\n Where: Rockfish Valley Community Center Auditorium\n When: On display through October 31\, 2016 \nThe exhibit displays masks created to represent local animals in the “Hands Across Our Land” event of August 18\, 2016\, protesting the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline. If built\, this pipeline would destroy many acres of habitat\, negatively impacting animals as well as humans. The mask-makers believe we should speak for those who cannot speak for themselves. The masks are to remind us of our non-human neighbors. They were used again on September 13\, 2016\, at the Lovingston Courthouse\, in an event that was part of a national action demonstrating solidarity with those resisting the Dakota Access Pipeline. We sympathize with and support the efforts of the Standing Rock Sioux to protect their water\, land\, and cultural and historical sites. \nTroubled Water: Voices from Bath\n Where: IX Art Park\, 963 2nd St SE\, Charlottesville\, VA 22902\n When: Photo Exhibit October 18-30\, 2016\, plus Video Premier Event Friday\, October 28\, 7:00-9:00 pm \nTroubled Water: Voices from Bath uses fine photography\, audio interviews and film to explore the personal and environmental issues of Dominion’s proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline in Bath County\, VA. Seeking to illuminate how the proposed Atlantic Coast natural gas pipeline affects those living closest to it\, professional photographer Lee Brauer\, a recent Bath County resident\, partnered with Barbara Adams\, a member of Interfaith Climate Justice in Richmond\, VA\, and Julian McBain and Sam Wright\, student environmental activists at Virginia Commonwealth University\, to create Troubled Water: Voices from Bath.

SUMMARY:Citizens' Picket for Climate and Energy Justice
DESCRIPTION:October 3-5\, 2016: join the CCAN-sponsored citizens’ picket line outside Governor McAuliffe’s downtown Richmond offices. Why three days? Because we have three major battles on our hands in Virginia where we need our Governor to stand with people\, not polluters: pipelines\, coal ash dumping\, and coastal flooding. Each day will feature the voices of Virginians on the front lines of these fights\, demanding that our Governor stand up to Dominion and other fossil fuel polluters. \nCome for one\, two\, or all three days for a lunchtime parade of colorful signs\, chanting\, and truth. We’ll ask Gov. McAuliffe to: 1) Reject state permits for fracked-gas pipelines; 2) Require Dominion and other utilities to permanently protect our waterways from toxic coal ash; 3) Commit to serious clean energy and adaptation solutions to keep our coastal communities above water. \nWHEN: Monday\, Oct. 3rd (pipeline focus)\, Tuesday\, Oct. 4 (coal ash focus)\, and Wednesday\, Oct. 5th (coast and climate focus). Meet at 11:30 a.m. for opening remarks; picket from noon – 1 p.m.\nWHERE: Meet at the Bell Tower on the Capitol Grounds (by the corner of N 9th St. & Bank St.). We’ll picket on the sidewalk outside the Governor’s offices at 1111 E Broad St\, Richmond\, VA.

SUMMARY:POSTPONED - Virginia Outdoors Foundation Meeting Regarding Conservation Easements in the Path of the ACP

SUMMARY:Hands Across Our Land
DESCRIPTION:Hands Across Our Land is a grassroots action designed to bring attention to the plight landowners and communities face at the hands of bullying\, multi-billion dollar corporations in their quest to build new fossil fuel infrastructure. We believe the rights of property ownership are fundamental to our democracy; that eminent domain should never be used for corporate gain and/or economic development. We believe the health\, safety and welfare of our families and communities are paramount.  We will not be bullied into submission by the energy industry which chooses greed over people\, shareholder profit over our environment. We will not become the energy industry’s sacrifice zones! \nInitiated in Nelson County by Free Nelson\, the first Hands Across Our Land actions were held on August 18\, 2015\, and thirty-five communities in 10 states participated\,.  The Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League (BREDL) became an integral partner with Free Nelson.  BREDL is now managing the annual Hands Across Our Land campaign\, and in 2016  plans to double\, perhaps even triple\, the 2015 participation in 2016. \nThis year Hands Across Our Land organizers have chosen to include communities who are facing the devastating affects being caused by coal ash contamination.  As energy companies rush to close their coal ash pounds\, billions of gallons of toxic coal ash wastewater are being dumped into our streams and rivers. These streams and rivers are the very same source for many water intake systems to municipal water supplies. The Environmental Protection Agency let us down when it refused to classify coal ash as a hazardous material knowing all the while it is radioactive and contains many heavy metals\, some known to be carcinogens. \nIn Nelson County\, actions will take place at the Stone Bridge on Route 250 on the Nelson County–Augusta County Line at 5:30 pm (click here for the event’s Facebook page) and at the Wingina Bridge on Route 56 on the Nelson County–Buckingham County line at 6:30 pm (click here for the event’s Facebook page). \nThere will also be an interfaith prayer service at 5:00 pm at Union Hill Baptist Church on Route 663 in Buckingham County.  Pastor Paul Wilson of Union Hill Baptist Church; Marion Kanour\, Rector of Grace Episcopal Church\, Massies Mill; and Swami Dayananda of the Yogaville community will be among those who will offer their prayers.  All are welcome to join this event. \nFurther information about other site-specific HAOL actions will be posted on the BREDL HAOL Web page.  Check there for details of an action near you.
