SUMMARY:Our Air\, Our Health\, Our Common Future: The Fight to Save Union Hill
DESCRIPTION:Our Air\, Our Health\, Our Common Future: The Fight to Save Union Hill \nSaturday\, September 7\, 2019 at 1 PM – 4 PM\nUnion Hill\, Virginia \nHosted by Appalachian Voices\, Sierra Club Virginia Chapter\, Virginia Interfaith Power and Light\, POWHR\, Water Is Life. Protect It. \nJoin friends\, neighbors and Virginians leading the fight to protect our communities against corporate polluters for a Town Hall to address this important question: What kind of Commonwealth are we? \nRefreshments will be served immediately following the event program. Please register on our Eventbrite web page (https://www.eventbrite.com/e/our-air-our-health-our-common-future-the-fight-to-save-union-hill-tickets-69378548105) so you have all the details and directions to the event (and to give us an accurate head count for food!). \nThe Town Hall will take place on the ancestral land of Taylor Harper\, a former slave who bought a portion of the plantation land he once toiled in Union Hill. This community has been targeted for a massive\, dangerous fracked-gas compressor station that would be part of the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline – a highly controversial\, expensive and unneeded project. \nYou’ll hear from several Harper descendants as well as other Union Hill landowners who likewise trace their ancestry to the courageous women and men who founded this historic community\, and other area residents. The Town Hall will also feature speakers from the Southern Environmental Law Center and Chesapeake Bay Foundation who are representing community members in efforts to stop the compressor station. \nThe fight for Union Hill is part of a broader struggle for environmental justice in Virginia. It also includes the Atlantic Coast Pipeline\, the Mountain Valley Pipeline\, the Chickahominy power plant\, the mega dump (called “Green Ridge”) in Cumberland County and other projects that threaten vulnerable communities. Together\, communities across the commonwealth are calling on our elected leaders to take meaningful action to develop sound environmental policies that leave no community behind.

SUMMARY:DEQ Hearing on Proposed Chickahominy Gas Power Station
DESCRIPTION:Friday June 21\, 2019\, State Air Pollution Control Board Meeting on proposed permit for the Chickahominy fracked gas power plant. 10 am. Virginia Crossing Hotel and Conference Center\, 1000 Virginia Center Parkway\, Glen Allen\, 23059 (Note the VA DEQ’s constant practice of having these key permit meetings outside the affected communities and in private\, not public\, spaces.)  For more info and graphic to share go to Virginia River Healers here: https://www.facebook.com/virginiariverhealers/posts/2582331515134764 \nThe Virginia DEQ is trying to approve a massive fracked gas power plant in an environmental justice community in Charles City County\, VA. The addition of this power station would make the area the 5th largest gas emissions area in the United States! Take a look at the annual emissions and health impacts table we put together. No community needs these toxins in their air\, especially at a time when solutions to climate change catastrophe are urgently needed. We need you all to help educate about the proposed Chickahominy Gas Power Station and see if you can show up to the hearing on Friday\, June 21st at 10am.

SUMMARY:Union Hill Social and Fish Fry
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, June 8: Union Hill Social and Fish Fry to kick off Bridging the Gap solar installation and environmental health training: 3-7 pm\, 1296 Union Hill Road. RSVP required to 804-248-6756. \nBridging the Gap In Virginia has received a grant from Mertz Gilmore Foundation to sponsor a solar installation and environmental health training program in the Union Hill area of Buckingham County\, for the benefit of the African-American community. As you know\, Union Hill struggles economically and many leave in search of work. \nOur vision is to provide good jobs for the residents of Union Hill while starting a green workforce development program that mentors formerly incarcerated individuals and at-risk youth in the areas of solar installation\, energy audits and conservation (i.e.\, weatherization\, efficiency) and in-door environmental health (i.e.\, lead testing and encapsulation\, mold remediation\, and air quality monitoring). \nWe are beginning this week long training with a community event on Saturday June 8th from 3-7pm with a community social and fish fry at 1296 Union Hill Rd.  Please join us in this celebration for and by our community. [Please let Richard Walker know if you will join us so we can plan accordingly. His number is (804) 248-6756.]

SUMMARY:Herring\, Stand with Appalachia: No Mountain Valley Pipeline
DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, May 18\, 2019 at 1 PM – 3 PM \nLeesburg\, Virginia \nRally with us in Virginia Attorney General Mark Herring’s hometown to encourage him to rise above the incompetence\, corruption\, and climate consequences associated with fracked gas pipelines. Delegates Chris Hurst and Sam Rasoul will lead Southwest Virginians to NoVa to stand shoulder-to-shoulder with allies from across the Commonwealth and demand a stop work order for the Mountain Valley Pipeline (MVP). \nVirginians oppose the MVP\, the Atlantic Coast Pipeline (ACP)\, and the Southside Connector because they are unnecessary\, unjust\, and destructive of our water\, ecosystems\, and climate. Virginians demand real action on climate change\, including major reductions in fossil fuel production and use. Virginians want a democracy that is not captured by corporate interests and a regulatory process that is honest\, transparent\, responsive to Virginians\, and protective of the most vulnerable among us. \nWe request that Mark Herring\n1) initiate a STOP WORK order for Mountain Valley Pipeline\,\n2) pursue his lawsuit against MVP to its fullest and refuse to settle the case\,\n3) and affirm the state’s authority to revoke a certification it granted. \nWe invite Herring to be a leader. Should he accept\, we invite him to be the star of the show on May 18. \nThis No Pipelines Rally for the Climate is co-sponsored by POWHR (Protect Our Water\, Heritage\, Rights)\, Indivisible NoVA West\, 350 Loudoun\, Great Falls Sierra Club\, Northern Virginia chapter of the Climate Reality Project\, Indivisible Northern Virginia\, Fauquier Indivisible\, Food and Water Watch\, Water is Life. SUMMARY:End Environmental Racism Now: March With Union Hill
DESCRIPTION:On May 17 and 18\, Virginians from all across the state will unite in common cause to oppose unjust and unneeded fracked-gas pipelines anywhere in the Commonwealth\, and to stand in solidarity for environmental justice and the climate. Join us\, along with featured speakers Rev. William Barber\, II\, and Karenna Gore. #noMVP #noACP @RevDrBarber \nMay 17\, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.\, Richmond \n“End Environmental Racism Now: March With Union Hill” \nJoin members of the Union Hill community and others as we rally with Rev. William Barber\, II in Richmond. We’ll march across the Robert E. Lee Bridge along the same route where 51 years ago\, almost to the day\, civil rights activists marched during Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s historic Poor People’s Campaign for economic justice. This year\, we’ll be marching for environmental justice in Union Hill\, a historic black community in Buckingham County targeted for a massive compressor station\, and to stop all fracked-gas infrastructure in the state.

SUMMARY:Buckingham Planning Commission Meeting on Compressor Station SUP
DESCRIPTION:Show up – bear witness – At the meeting on Monday evening April 22 of the Buckingham Board of Supervisors to ask the Planning Commission to amend the Special Use Permit (SUP) for the compressor station communication tower to require that the infrastructure be served by broadband and that a last mile provider of broadband be found for businesses and residents along the pipeline. This will enhance safety and economic self-sufficiency in Buckingham\, and especially help those who are forced to accept the pipeline. \nBecause the original SUP was issued for only 18 months\, there is an opportunity to respond to new conditions – the change in state law concerning utility sale of broadband – since the pipeline has not yet been built. Citizens are asking that the Supervisors again approve the SUP for the usual 18 month term. Many things related to technology\, cybersecurity and other issues are changing quickly. Please do not close the door to asking ACP to include new technology or address new issues by making the SUP last more than 18 months.
