SUMMARY:End Environmental Racism Now: March With Union Hill
DESCRIPTION:On May 17 and 18\, Virginians from all across the state will unite in common cause to oppose unjust and unneeded fracked-gas pipelines anywhere in the Commonwealth\, and to stand in solidarity for environmental justice and the climate. Join us\, along with featured speakers Rev. William Barber\, II\, and Karenna Gore. #noMVP #noACP @RevDrBarber \nMay 17\, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m.\, Richmond \n“End Environmental Racism Now: March With Union Hill” \nJoin members of the Union Hill community and others as we rally with Rev. William Barber\, II in Richmond. We’ll march across the Robert E. Lee Bridge along the same route where 51 years ago\, almost to the day\, civil rights activists marched during Martin Luther King\, Jr.’s historic Poor People’s Campaign for economic justice. This year\, we’ll be marching for environmental justice in Union Hill\, a historic black community in Buckingham County targeted for a massive compressor station\, and to stop all fracked-gas infrastructure in the state.

SUMMARY:The Ties That Bind Opening Reception
DESCRIPTION:Friday\, May 3\, 2019 at 5 PM – 7 PM\nStaunton Innovation Hub\n32 N Augusta St\, Staunton\, Virginia 24401 \nJoin us at the Hub for the opening of “The Ties That Bind\,” a Community Collaborative Art and Story project created by eco-artist and poet Amelia L. Williams\, on Friday May 3rd at 5 PM. The project involves over 100 fabric braids created by community groups and individuals across Virginia to demonstrate their opposition to and messages about the unnatural gas pipelines proposed for our state. The braids are all joined together into one long strand that winds through and around structures symbolizing the different terrains and communities that would be\, or already are being devastated. The braids demonstrate how our communities are bound together in our desire to protect our families\, health\, air\, water\, forests\, and planet. Learn more: http://www.wildink.net/the-ties-that-bind.html \nAlso during May\, come make your own braid to add to the installation! Bring scrap fabric\, old clothes\, curtains\, etc. or use the provided fabric and contribute a few sentences about your braid and your protest story on Saturday\, May 11th at 10 AM and Thursday\, May 23rd at 6 PM.

SUMMARY:Buckingham Planning Commission Meeting on Compressor Station SUP
DESCRIPTION:Show up – bear witness – At the meeting on Monday evening April 22 of the Buckingham Board of Supervisors to ask the Planning Commission to amend the Special Use Permit (SUP) for the compressor station communication tower to require that the infrastructure be served by broadband and that a last mile provider of broadband be found for businesses and residents along the pipeline. This will enhance safety and economic self-sufficiency in Buckingham\, and especially help those who are forced to accept the pipeline. \nBecause the original SUP was issued for only 18 months\, there is an opportunity to respond to new conditions – the change in state law concerning utility sale of broadband – since the pipeline has not yet been built. Citizens are asking that the Supervisors again approve the SUP for the usual 18 month term. Many things related to technology\, cybersecurity and other issues are changing quickly. Please do not close the door to asking ACP to include new technology or address new issues by making the SUP last more than 18 months.

DESCRIPTION:Saturday\, March 30th\, the Pipeline Air Force will be having its first UAV (drone) meet-up of 2019\, and you are invited! \nThey will be meeting to share skills\, knowledge\, experience\, and ideas regarding UAV technology all day from 10am-4pm in the Rockfish Valley Community Center\, in Nelson County\, VA. They will be focusing on how to plug your skills and experience as a remote pilot into our Pipeline CSI program to defend our quality of life and water quality in the Blue Reidge and Allegheny mountains of Appalachia\, but the skills and lessons to be shared are applicable to many use-cases involving drones. \nPlease fill out this RSVP form by Saturday 3/23 if you intend to joining them: https://goo.gl/forms/S7Roh9Y3uvGYQpa93 \nSpace is limited to the first 25 folks who register; lunch will be provided for those who RSVP. \nRegistration priority will be given to those who are most serious about joining the program and those who already have their Part 107 license. \nThe Pipeline CSI has been developing our systems and methodology for aerial photos review of missions taken by our volunteer manned aircraft over the past 6 months. The Atlantic Coast Pipeline project is currently on an indefinite work stoppage until at least September due to their loss of multiple key federal permits. We want to make the most of this reprieve of work by sharing skills\, putting our heads together\, and getting organized. \nCome learn how to execute and share flight plans for imagery product creation like orthomosaics and 3D models. See how professionals and volunteers are creating a new way to monitor development of huge construction projects. Meet other remote pilots\, technologists\, and discover how you can give back to the community at large as a volunteer drone monitor for the Pipeline CSI! \nWhen: Saturday\, March 30th\, 10am-4pm\nWhere: Rockfish Valley Community Center\, 190 Rockfish School Ln\, Afton\, VA 22920\nWhat to bring (optional but recommended): your drone\, a laptop\, and energy\, attention\, and a good attitude.

SUMMARY:Ties That Bind Event
DESCRIPTION:Join other concerned citizens to make fabric braids that will be woven together into a huge #NoPipelines fabric sculpture\, “The Ties That Bind.” Come see your work displayed at the Staunton Innovation Hub in May. \nEcoartist and poet Amelia L. Williams is coordinating community and environmental organizations\, artists and concerned citizens to create a communally-made work in protest of the proposed Atlantic Coast Pipeline and Mountain Valley Pipeline. \nCome on March 30\, 2019\, either 9:30 am or 1:30 pm (two different locations in Nelson County – details of locations after free registration) to join in making long fabric braids\, adding decorative elements\, and words of protest\, hope\, and support. You are invited to bring fabric that comes from your life\, tells a story\, or is linked to your pipeline resistance. \nFabric strips and all necessary materials will be provided\, but your braid may be more special if you bring your own strips at least 4 feet long or enough pieces to knot together to make three 4-5 ft strips. Tell your story to be added to the exhibit: \n\nI love winter on the farm; this old scarf has seen me through some cold ones. May it help protect our land from the pipeline.\nI live in a city. The pipeline won’t be in my backyard\, but I have learned how pipelines leak methane and make climate change worse\, so I brought 3 green fabrics to show my care for the earth.\nI hike in the National Forest and don’t want the pipeline to cross the Appalachian Trail. I brought some old jeans and t-shirts I used to wear hiking.\nThis is my son’s childhood twin bed set. The compressor station could affect children’s health and increase rates of asthma so I want to protect the children.\nI’m braiding old shirts and leaving the pockets accessible with “no pipelines” messages tucked inside.\n\nRegister here. Exact address will be sent by email to free ticket holders.

SUMMARY:Cancelled - The Rights of Nature for the Community
DESCRIPTION:THIS MEETING HAS BEEN CANCELLED \nWednesday\, March 20\, 2019 at 7 PM – 9 PM\, Powhatan County Public Library\, 2270 Mann Rd\, Powhatan\, Virginia 23139. \nIf you are interested in protecting your county from environment harms\, come learn how we can work together to protect the Rights of Nature. We will have the opportunity to hear Ben Price\, from the Community Environmental Legal Defense Fund (CELDF)\, share information about the concept of Community Bill of Rights (CBOR) for our local communities and how to protect the rights of nature. 200 municipalities nationwide have already passed CBORs and over 3 dozen communities have protected the rights of nature in their local communities. Check out the CELDF website for more information. (www.CELDF.org) \nThe Constitution of Virginia says it is our right to clean air and clean water. However\, our rights conflict with the state and federal laws. As a systemic problem\, the law is built around the needs of the monied corporations. The law is on their side. We are looking at legalized harm. \nActivists in this movement often view the environment as the next frontier in humanity’s expanding moral circle: over the centuries\, we’ve extended rights to more and more beings (e.g. slaves\, women)\, so why shouldn’t nature itself be next? \nThe Lake Erie Bill of Rights (LEBOR)\, an amendment to the city charter of Toledo\, has just been voted on and passed. It is the first rights-based legislation aimed at protecting a whole US ecosystem: the lake\, its tributaries\, and the many species connected to it\, including humans! \nENOUGH IS ENOUGH\, PRESERVE VA rejects the conventional Western way of relating to nature — as property that is there for the taking\, as an object rather than a subject. We recognize that we are going to have to work within the existing Western legal system\, like the LEBOR mentioned above\, if we want that to change. \nWe are betting that the best strategy for protecting the environment is to stretch our society’s understanding of what can have rights. If corporations have rights\, why not nature? It’s a bold bet\, but with climate change decimating the planet at such a ferocious rate\, it is the kind of innovative thinking we need. \nThe LEBOR isn’t without precedent! It’s part of the nascent worldwide Rights of Nature movement\, which has notched several victories in the past dozen years. The Rights of Nature have been included in the constitution of Ecuador. Rivers and parks have already won legal rights in countries like Colombia\, India\, and New Zealand. \nJoin us to learn more about how to bring this paradigm shift to your local community!

SUMMARY:State Water Control Board Meeting
DESCRIPTION:At the State Water Control Board (Board) meeting on Dec. 13\, 2018\, a motion was approved to conduct a hearing to consider the revocation of Virginia’s Upland 401 Water Quality Certification for the Mountain Valley Pipeline project. \nAfter 8 weeks of delay\, during which construction of the Mountain Valley Pipeline has continued unabated despite over 300 DEQ filed violations of the water permit and a pending lawsuit against MVP by Virginia’s Attorney General\, the SWCB will discuss the issue without public input. Sigh. \nA special Board meeting to discuss this action has been scheduled for Friday\, March 1\, at 10 a.m. The meeting will take place at the DoubleTree By Hilton Hotel located at 1021 Koger Center Blvd.\, in Richmond. \n“We fully understand the level of intense public interest in the hearing that was discussed in December\,” said State Water Control Board Chair Heather Wood. “This is a unique situation and we need to ensure the proper legal process is followed. The Board will consider and discuss the next steps as a matter of law to ensure transparency and due process.” \nPlease note: \n— The hearing referred to at the Dec. 13\, 2018\, Board meeting will not occur at this special meeting on March 1; however\, it will be discussed by the Board. \n— Public comments are not received at special Board meetings. \n— The Board reserves the right to revise agendas without notice unless prohibited by law. \nThe full March 1\, meeting notice and agenda is available on the Virginia Regulatory Town Hall website at http://townhall.virginia.gov/L/meetings.cfm?time=future.

SUMMARY:Environmental Data Justice: Visions & Values
DESCRIPTION:Activists striving to create more livable shared futures are increasingly struggling with the discriminatory force of data. We need new practices and principles to wrestle with the fraught politics of data in justice work\, including environmental justice.
